Tricked into a One Way Trip to Iraq

Donation protected
My name is Amna Al Shawi, I'm 18 years old and an Iraqi American born in the United States to an immigrant family. Throughout my life I wanted to become my own person, I wanted to grow into what I aspired not what someone aspired for me. Growing up with these liberal ideals in an Islamic conservative home had always posed many challenges. I would rebel against some of my parent’s beliefs and then face mental and emotional abuse, but I persevered in remaining true to who I am. I fought with my parents over everything, I knew to become my own person I had to distance myself from the control my parents had in my life. As a way to escape my parents, I entered and received a scholarship within my college to study abroad in Costa Rica. I saw this as the perfect opportunity to move away from my parents. After I was awarded the scholarship my parents began acting different, they interfered less in my life and I believed that the situation was improving. Then my parents approached me and my siblings telling us that they had booked a family trip for the winter break to travel across the Middle East. At first I was skeptical but eventually I trusted my parents and accompanied by my siblings went on the family trip to the Middle East. As we arrived in Iraq I began noticing different details that worried me such as the amount of suitcases we brought to Iraq, I hadn't seen my passport and people were welcoming my family home. Once the day passed that we were supposed to leave Iraq for Dubai, I soon realized that we were not going to be leaving Iraq our stay would be permanent. I confronted my parents on this issue where they confirmed that my worries were true. I fear for my safety as my parents told me that “the laws of America do not apply here” and that I should “forget about my previous life in America”. I am forced in a house where I cannot leave without being accompanied by a man. Every day I see violence from cars being set on fire to violent protests. I was tricked into coming to Iraq not knowing that my parents had moved my family and got rid of my passport. I am currently near Baghdad awaiting the money needed to travel to the US-Iraqi Embassy to purchase a new passport and to stay somewhere I know that I will be safe. A new passport will cost around USD $200, I also need to purchase a plane ticket back to America which will cost around USD $1600. Once back in America I plan to stay in shelters and work in order to continue my studies in the United States. To survive the first month of my stay back in the United States before I can get settled financially it will cost around USD $1000 to pay for food to survive and for basic living necessities. I need to get back to America as soon as possible so I can continue college and so I know that I am safe. Please help me return back to America to a place where it is safe and I can continue my studies.  If you want to follow my journey closer you can see it on twitter at: AmnaShawi
