Trent's 3 year Cancer battle

Donation protected
I'm a single parent.  I've been in full time employment until March 2018. My son Trent was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma at the age of 16. Trent commenced chemotherapy treatment immediately for approximately 6 months.  He was having all the usual side effects throughout his chemo treatment, until he was admitted to hospital with a high temperature. Whilst in hospital, the nurses were doing his observations and noticed his oxygen levels were considerably low.  Trent was then admitted into ICU and put on oxygen to help maintain his breathing.  Things started to go down hill very quickly and Trent ended up with Pneumonia and other complications.  He spent the next two and a half weeks in ICU where he also celebrated his 17th birthday. When he was released they continued with his chemotherapy up until the end of 2016. During a routine scan and doctors review, we received the good news that Trent was finally in remission.  2017 was going to be the best year and a new start to life.  Trent was doing well and went back to school to repeat Year 11.  He was only back at school for a month when he started to get a few minor back pains.  I took him to the doctors and they told us it would be as a result of the recovery he was going through and suggested physiotherapy might help to relieve this.  During a physio session, we heard his back crack.  The next day Trent couldn't walk.  We ended up back in hospital having more scans done.  We got the results only to find that one of Trent's vertebrae had been disintegrated by a tumour.  95% of that vertebrae was gone.   He was riddled with cancer again.  The cancer was now at an aggressive stage.  Scans also revealed that the end of the vertebrae had broken off,  which was now pointing towards his spinal cord.  Trent was now on spinal watch until the doctors and surgeons worked out a plan. All the time I was thinking "why and how, can anyone be put into remission and not even three months later, get the devastating news again?"  As Trent endured more grueling chemo he was granted a Stem Cell Transplant in November 2017.  He was recovering well and we hoped for positive results when he was required to have his next scan in February 2018. As proposed, Trent had his follow up scan in February.  A few weeks later we met with the doctors for the results.  You could see in the doctors eyes, that he was about to give us the news that no parent, child or a young adult wants to hear.  Trent's Stem Cell Transplant results came back negative and the cancer was growing more. With time ticking I asked "more chemo, another transplant, what do we do???"  His Doctor mentioned a new drug that is yet to be released by the Australian Government.  I thought "yeah great, something that's got a high chance of working but not yet released.  How much is this going to cost?"  Trent's doctor advised that I can purchase this drug through him but at a cost of $4,000 per treatment.  Whilst trying to fund for this drug, Trent will need to commence chemo treatment again and hope the cancer is contained. With the help of family, I have managed to continue working full time but this is no longer an option.  I have no choice but to be home full time with Trent until we receive the news that we are hoping for.
