As many of you may know, my mother Anita has been suffering with a Traumatic Brain Injury since October of 2010. It was a freak accident that happened one cold morning as she was walking into the high school where she was teaching at and she slipped on ice. She fell hard and hit her head. But even worse, after getting up, she fell again and hit her head, again! Although, embarrased and in pain, she did not think much of it at the time and proceeded with her morning and day as normal. Little did she know, that this incident would completely change her life!
It's been 5 years now, and she has honestly shown little to no improvement with her symptoms. In fact, some of her symptoms have gradually worsened since the accident. She has saught after the best medical care and experts, such as neurologists and neurotherapy specialists, but she has yet to return to her normal levels of functioning she had before the accident- neither physical, emotional, or cognitive levels.To give a brief overview, her symptoms range from personality changes, short term memory loss, difficulty processing information, delayed response time, inhibited motor movements, severe migraines, numbness in her face, neck, throughout her body, and so on. For those close to Anita, many have witnessed the changes that have taken place in Anita over the past several years.
Once a four sport collegiate Athlete at Southern Utah University, she earned a Master's Degree in secondary education, taught high school for 18 years and coached Varsity Volleyball and Basketball for many years - She has had a positive impact on the lives of many young people! Coaching and teaching were two things she was very passionate about! She is also a mother of 5 girls, and now a grandmother to a grandson. After her accident, she had to step away from teaching and even today she is limited in her daily activities, exercise, and overall responsibilities as a wife, mother and grandmother.
For those who know Anita personally, you will agree my Mom is an incredible woman of faith! She has strong courage, and noble integrity! I admire her very much and although I know how difficult this journey has been for her these past 5 years - it gives me great strength to see her pressing forward and continuing to seek out the best possible medical care available!
Alas, there is HOPE!!!! There is a cognitive therapy treatment program known as Cognitive FX, that has a track record of HUGE success in participating patients with brain injurys. Dr. Alina Fong, PhD, Clinical Director and one of the co-founders of this program was one of the original neurologists who first saw my Mom after her accident! About 2 weeks ago, KSL did a story about Cognitive FX (watch link: http://www.ksl.com/?nid=1012&sid=36830294 ) and my Mom was prompted to look into this program. In the days that followed, several individuals also encouraged my Mom to look into this treatment. Among these referrals, her current treating doctor highly recommended to her that this treatment would be worth it for her to do!
After my Mother's initial consultation with Dr. Alina Fong - for the first time in years my Mom has felt genuine hope for the improvement of her symptoms from her brain injury! Unfortunately, insurance does not cover the cost of this treatment. The total cost of this treatment will range between $7,900 and $9,000. A cash deposit needs to be made before she can even begin the treatment. Now although humbling for all of us to be so open about her health and the need for financial donations, I felt strongly impressed that this was something I needed to do - to give her aid in fundraising money for this cause. We are prayerful and hopeful that the Lord will provide the means and the way for her to participate in this breakthrough congitive therapy treatment! We are hoping to start her therapy in the beginning to mid-November. I want to thank any of you in advance for your support, love and prayers and any contribution you may make.
