Traverse for Defend the Sacred AK

(You've been redirected here from the original YouCaring campaign, as YouCaring was bought by GoFundMe and so I had to remake this as a GoFundMe campaign before all YouCaring campaigns closed July 31. We already raised $6,800 for this cause on YouCaring, I'm hoping to raise another $4k here by the end of the summer! This campaign is still linked directly to Defend the Sacred AK- they are the only ones who can access the funds.)

Defend the Sacred AK  is a native-led coalition fighting to protect Alaska's sacred lands, and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in particular. This summer, I'm having adventures in Alaska and writing about them on my blog (carrotquinn.com ) as well as posting photos to my instagram (instagram.com/carrotquinn ) in order to raise money for this rad org, whose vision, per their website (here) is "An Alaska that is guided by Indigenous knowledge and place-based knowledge in a post-oil economy."

A bit about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge:

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is one of the last intact wildernesses on Earth. The coastal plains of ANWR, called area 1002, are where the porcupine caribou herd (which number around 200 thousand) migrates to each year to have their calves. Recently, a bill was signed into law which opens area 1002 to oil drilling. According to USGS estimates, the amount of oil present in area 1002 is enough to power the US for one year. Resource extraction in ANWR would permanently damage one of the last intact wildernesses on earth, as well as put the porcupine caribou herd in danger- the herd needs the sanctuary of the relatively bug and predator-free coastal plains in which to have their calves.

The Gwich'in people and other Native Alaskan peoples have inhabited ANWR for more than forty thousand years. The Giwch'in have a deeply spiritual and practical relationship with the caribou, on which they depend for subsistence. The Gwich'in people see their own destinies as being intertwined with the caribou, and they are strong protectors of the caribou and the land, and in particular of the caribou's calving grounds, which they call "The sacred place where life begins." The Gwich'in people have been key players in the continued, decades-long fight to protect ANWR. In the last three decades, there have been fifty attempts to open area 1002 for drilling. None have been successful until the bill that was signed into law last December. Now the Gwich'in people are being forced to fight harder than they ever have before, to protect the land and the caribou without which they would lose their way of life entirely.

Defend the Sacred AK is a small organizations with limited funds, and they need our help as they move forward in their work to protect ANWR. Please join me in protecting this sacred place, and supporting the indigenous people who have been fighting so hard to defend it! This fundraiser is linked directly to Defend the Sacred AK via Bernadette Demientieff, and all funds go directly to the org.
