Transgender Opera at the NC Capitol

Hello!

We are Leo Hurley and Charles Osborne, alumni of NC School of the Arts. In light of the recent passage of HB 2, enshrining transgender and LGBT discrimination in North Carolina, we fear we can no longer stand by.

We have received special permission to present The Body Politic, our opera about trans and Muslim discrimination, at the NC General Assembly on May 19th, the very building where HB 2 passed.

We will invite every member of the NC House and Senate to the show, so that we might use our art to start a dialogue about the trans community in North Carolina.

We need your help to get there!

The Body Politic follows Iphis, a transgender man from Afghanistan who emigrates to Chapel Hill, North Carolina during the Afghan War, only to uncover a world of prejudice. The Body Politic, commissioned by Juventas New Music Ensemble, is premiering in Boston May 5-7 at the Boston Center for the Arts. Tickets/Info: www.juventasmusic.com

Your support will pay for opera singers, a conductor, a pianist, a stage director, costumes, props, housing,
transportation, rehearsal spaces, printing, and other expenses.

The more we raise, the further we go! With your support, we could produce a fully-staged version of The Body Politic, live-stream the event, or tour the concert around NC!

North Carolina is our home. The bigotry enshrined by the General Assembly saddens and confuses us. It is not reflective of the NC we know, and the NC we wish to see. It is our duty as citizen-artists to use our voices to make a difference in the world. With your help, we can make that difference at the North Carolina General Assembly, through music and art.

We cannot thank you enough for your support. This may be the most important performance of our lives. Together, we can turn the tide of hatred in North Carolina.

Follow us online at www.hurleyandosborne.com and be sure to join us May 19th at the NC General Assembly in Raleigh!

We are already in talks to bring the show to other venues across the state to continue the work of fighting trans discrimination in North Carolina. Additional funds will be used towards this goal!
