BC Wildfire Rescue Horse Finds His New Herd

Tony's Journey

Tony is a 14 year old percheron cross that was rescued from behind the fire lines during the 2017 British Columbia wildfires in Canada. When the SPCA arrived to rescue Tony and his companion Poppy, they noticed that they could barely walk.

Prior to the fire, his hoof care had been neglected, which is terribly painful and potentially fatal for horses. Tony and his friend were taken to the BC SPCA for treatment until they were healthy enough for adoption.

Tony’s story was spreading across Facebook. Followers of my life’s work with rescue horses began to tag and share his story with me. There is something unforgettable about his journey and presence that touches me deeply. I had a strong sense of connection and a knowing that my other 18 horses were his new herd. There is love and belonging here. There is purpose.

Tony's New Herd

Tony just joined our herd of 18 horses on our 80 acres, some rescued from similar cases of abuse or neglect. The rest of our herd are retired horses that cannot be ridden or “employed” in the traditional sense.

Once a horse is deemed not useful for saddle their options are few. Many of our horses come to us as a last alternative before going to slaughter, being euthanized, or ending up in auction.

These horses come here to be able to live their lives as horses should - in a herd with space and access to all that they need for well-being. We reconnect them with purpose and connection through facilitated personal growth and leadership work.

These horses are our partners, not our tools. It’s our responsibility to honor the breadth of their stories, advocating and educating others of what often happens to these magnificent animals once they are deemed no longer “useful” for us in traditional employment.

There is wisdom in their stories.  The reflection of this wisdom is their magic.

Tony's Trust Fund

If you resonate with the space we hold, we invite you to contribute to Tony’s journey as he reconnects with his purpose and finds belonging and family in his new herd. All funds are to provide Tony with his physical care and to ensure his well-being during his first year with us.

Our Gratitude

In honouring Tony’s arrival, we have gifted him with a new name - Malachi - meaning my angel or messenger.  We are deeply touched and moved by all those that support and empower his place here with his new herd at Epona Rise.
