2016 UPDATE
:  It is with sadness that we report that Toms cancer has spread and as of October he is now stage 4. His cancer has not responded as expected to treatments from our local hospitals. This is not normal lung cancer, this is no doubt a result of years of firefighting and his exposure to 9/11 contamination in NYC. He is now being treated in Roswell (Buffalo)and his doctors are optimistic with the new treatment protocol.

No one should get cancer and have to go bankrupt trying to get well. Tom now pays for his own health insurance in order to continue advanced treatments in Buffalo. Living expenses, Insurance, medication, shared custody of his three boys, travel expenses and treatment costs have all added up. Tom will be homeless in a couple short months if we cannot raise significant money to assist him. His disability pay is not making ends meet. There is no time to schedule another BBQ fund raiser. Go Fund Me is our only hope.

Thank you to all who have donated already throughout the year. Previously this Go Fund me raised $2706. Can we do it again? All his family and friends appreciate the support given this year, as we continue to support him as well. It’s just gotten hard for even us now. Please consider a donation. If everyone we know donated $20, Tom would be caught up on his bills and able to continue treatments in Buffalo. Please prayerfully consider a donation.

We have hope and faith that these new treatments will be the difference in battling this aggressive cancer.

Thank you

2015:  A group of friends have gathered to throw a benefit to assist Tom Taft with expenses associated with his cancer treatments and loss of work. We are hoping his community and friends may have donations to offer.
Tom Taft has been diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer which has spread to the lymph nodes in his neck. Tom has already started chemotherapy treatments and prognosis is hopeful.
Tom Taft has been an active member of the Owego Community since moving here in 1991 after his service in the Marine Corp. Tom is an active member of the Owego Fire Department and Emergency Squad. He had served as chief of the department for 12 years, through multiple disasters in Owego. He is the longest running chief in the history of Owego. Above and beyond those duties he was a first responder to the NYC 9/11 attack and worked at ground zero providing medical aide. He spent multiple days stationed at the Owego Police Department during the 2008 and 2011 floods, providing water rescue and assistance to village residence. If you’ve ever called 911, you probably know Tom Taft.
Tom also started coaching baseball, lacrosse, and football teams when his children began playing in 2003. He continues to coach with the junior football league and has been director of the league the past five years. If you’ve ever rooted for those kids in red and blue, you probably know Tom Taft.
We could continue on and on; at the bowling alley rooting his three kids on, maybe you passed him at church, or he’s repaired your cable box? Maybe you knew him at IBM, or from college or his days tossing pizzas at the hut? Maybe you saw him doing dishes at the Free Christmas Dinners or at a civil war reenactment? Maybe he safety inspected your site at the Strawberry Festival, pulled you from a car crash or put out the fire in your derby car? Maybe… you know Tom Taft?
Thank you in advance for your consideration. If you would like to donate to Tom Taft’s benefit, please contact the person who gave you this letter. Or you can contact us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/BenefitTomTaft.  Benefit will be July 25 at the Newark Valley Fire Department pavilion for 3-8pm  Check out the face book page for more details.
