Tom's Walk Across America BOOK

Hi! My name is Tom Griffen. Between January-July 2018, I walked across America. Took me 205 days to cover 3410 miles and cross 14 states. I met the most amazing people along the way. It truly became My Walking Life !

I am writing a book about my epic journey. Partially to tell my story, but mostky to tell the stories of the living saints I met en route. I believe it's wildly important to share the wisdom and kindness that was so graciously (and regularly) passed onto me. Frankly, it's the least I can do!

I hope to have a complete draft by March 1, 2019. But I also know this might be too ambitious. But as of mid-November, I am 100+ pages into it. I didn't want to post a crowd-funding campaign until I was in the thick of the creative process.

Good writing is a full-time job. And though I make a living as a freelance consultant, for the next few months I'd really like to put 100% of my daily effort into completing this book. Which means my freelance income will be greatly affected by this temporary re-prioritization. I trust this focus will lead to a more sizzling page-turner!

- Personal Living Expenses - $1500/month (tight, but possible)
- Professional Editing Services - $1000 (estimate)
- Publication Fees - Unknown, but probably nominal.

$10 - POSTCARD: A progress postcard sent via snail mail.
$50 - BOOK: 1 signed copy of the book (when it’s done, of course).
$100 - BOOKCHAIN: 1 signed copy of the book + a keychain made from something I found while walking across the USA.
$250 - BOOKSPOON: 3 signed copies of the book + a hand-carved spoon.
$1000 - BOOKEVENT: I come to your location to do a speaking gig + 10 free books.

*After you donate, I will contact you with reward info and for shipping details (I'll also make sure you want the reward in the first place).

If I exceed my goal amount, I'll pack up my 300 pages of notes and sequester myself in a quiet town with a good coffee shop where I can write my face off and not be affected by day-to-day distractions. Please help me make this happen!

Thanks so much for considering. Check back often for fun updates and photos of me scribbling away! Big love to you all!

Hi Everyone!
Just (again) wanting to keep everyone in the loop. After attending the AWP literary conference in Portland early this month I left feeling VERY confident that I'll be able to secure a proper publisher for my coming book. The majority of people in the know recommended I complete my manuscript then connect with an agent who'll shop my work to various houses. I am pretty sure this sounds easier than it is, but that's the plan. Lots of folks assured me that nonfiction is hot right now. We'll see if my finished product is hot enough!
Meanwhile, I am still working in Portland until early June. Upon my return home, I plan to buckle in and complete my book. Hopefully by late summer I'll be ready to start hitting up agents. I continue to learn so much as I navigate this process.
Thanks again for your support! I appreciate you all so very much.

Hi Everyone!
Right now I am working a long-term on-site consulting gig in Portland, Oregon and doing a little juggling act with my book writing. My walk project is ~75% done and a month ago I had coffee with a publisher (W.W. Norton) who "wants to see more". Since then I've been fine-tuning my query letter and book excerpts and will soon send it off for their review.
Meanwhile, next week I am attending a literary convention at the Portland Convention Center and plan to hit up as many small presses as possible. Just trying to get lots of eyes on my manuscript. Hopefully someone will be interested in publishing it!
I'll be balancing the book and my client's needs until June, at which time I'll head home and get back to full-time writing. All part of the process!!
Big love to you all.

Hi Everyone!
First off, giant thanks to all of you who've so generously donated to my book-writing project. If you are so inclined, please share my endeavor with your people. The more support I can muster up, the better. And if there's one thing I learned on the walk it's to accept kindness if/when it comes my way.
UPDATE: In terms of the journey, today I finally wrote my way out of Texas. What a big state! This means I am nearly 2/3 done with draft #1. I'm committed to extra writing hours for the next two weeks before I start an on-site consulting gig in Portland, OR. I'll still be avidly writing while I am there, but less likely to get a 10 hour day in!
Big love to you all. Process beats product.

Hi Everyone!
First off, thanks again for supporting me as I write my book about walking across America. Thanks to your patronage I'll be able to keep writing for 6+ hours per day until this project is done.
In early December I was nearly 100 pages into the first draft. When I realized I wasn't happy with its direction, I trashed the whole thing and started from scratch. Draft #2 is off to a blazing start, and in a short month I've knocked out a new 220 pages - and I couldn't be happier.
I expect that by the end of March I'll have a working draft of the book that's to come (but there will still be plenty of edits to do at that point).
I am loving this reflective process, and am excited to share the end result.
Big love to you for helping a writer write!
