This summer I am joining the nonprofit "Rise" in Moshi, Tanzania, where we will volunteer at First Chance Education Centre, an early childhood school for children ages 2-5.
Your donation will directly support my travel to Moshi, the following projects & anything RISE decides will further their mission:
YEAR ROUND Salaries for SIX Teachers and Staff Members: $10,000
YEAR ROUND Breakfast AND Lunch with added nutritional value: $3,000
YEAR ROUND Utilities to keep the school running (electricity, water, firewood): $745
Parents’ Night: $500
As a woman pursuing a PhD in chemistry who has played sports since age 3, I believe that physical and mental wellness go hand in hand. For me, staying physically active has been essential to keep me grounded, energized, and able to tackle the obstacles I’ve faced. I would not have made it this far without a support system composed of my loved ones, professors, coaches, and programs that supported me emotionally, financially and academically. I realize how blessed I am to have had advocates and supporters to encourage me along my path. Not everyone has access to such support systems, education or even proper nutrition. As such, I am motivated and excited to help RISE in their mission to providing these essentials to children in Tanzania.
This year, my time will focus on continuing efforts to improve First Chance, teaching and spending time with the children and collaborating with the teachers on lesson plans and working directly with the community. We will work to incorporate yoga, movement, and music into the day and I will put my scientific background to use and conduct some fun demonstrations and experiments with the kids!
First Chance Education Centre was established by a woman affectionately called Mama Lucy. As a young girl in Tanzania, she was denied the education available to male siblings and left school at age 14. She hopes to give children, who for various reasons would not be able to otherwise attend school, the opportunity to begin their education.
Brittany, the founder of RISE, has been working with Mama Lucy and the school since 2015. Inspired by the children and the people she met, Brittany now serves as Patron of the school. She has teamed up with getFIT615, a fitness and health community in Nashville, and this is the second group trip to Tanzania they've done together. Last year, the volunteers were able to fundraise for a school van for transportation, the teachers’ salaries, adding nutrition to the school meals, and much more. At the beginning of this year, RISE brought an early childhood educator from the US to work with the teachers at First Chance to develop an age appropriate curriculum.
