Therapy Dogs: K9s on Campus

Donation protected
Our program is taking off! Finny (our golden retriever) is growing like a bean and has quite a few admirers on a campus of hundreds. We have our "K9 Day" on Thursdays now at lunch where our outside trainer comes into the school to work with the kids, Finny, and her own yellow lab pup.  Thanks to all of you for making this possible!

Original Story:

For the past 11 years, Morro Bay High School has had the privilege of hosting an amazing animal, Toby, a golden retriever, a certified therapy dog.  During those years, Toby provided comfort, joy, and needed love to thousands of students who passed through this school. In addition, he was well known in the community, and was the "theater dog" in our local community theater.

Here is a local news story on Toby:

We lost Toby in October of 2016, and the incredible number of personal comments, cards, posters, paintings, and drawings from students, parents, teachers, and administrators both on the site and at the district office was heartfelt and amazing. As Toby's owner (although he was really the boss), I was overwhelmed by the response, and convinced that in the near future I would bring another fine animal into our academic midst.

Toby was a certifed Therapy Dog, having gone through all the appropriate training from the AKC Good Citizen certification to his license after he passed his therapy dog test with Therapy Dogs International. I will do the same with our next canine friend.

To that end, Gofundme will allow me to defray many expenses associated with introducing a new therapy dog and program into the school.  Some of the funds will be applied to training and certification in all the steps leading to "graduation" and official entry into MBHS as the next generation support animal.

In addition, I want to create an educational atmosphere for students--as a beyond-curricular activity--and bring in certified trainers from the area either after school or on the weekends to work with both the students AND me to promote good handling and training of their pets.  And this is where most of our funds will be used.  There are many good trainers and dog experts in the community, and I want to make them available free of charge to our students. Many young people and their parents have or will have dogs, and I believe that a good foundation in coaching and understanding of their animals helps both dogs and humans.

I hope you'll help us in this venture.

Thanks!
