Travis is a two-time Paralympic gold medalist and will your help he's pursuing a path to compete again, 16 years later!

In 2018 Travis became the hand cycling Road Race national champion at the 2018 USA Cycling National Championships and qualified for the 2018 UCI Para-cycling World Championships in Maniago Italy where he placed in the top ten in the World! It's time to take things to the next level.

From his youth, Travis has focused on athletic accomplishment, and his emphasis on excelling has chalked up numerous milestones. He served as captain of the University of Illinois wheelchair basketball team, joined the Canadian National Wheelchair Basketball Team for six years, and became a two-time gold medalist in wheelchair basketball after competing in the Sydney 2000 Paralympics and the Athens 2004 Paralympics for team Canada.

Since becoming an American citizen, Travis has turned his attention toward a potential road to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics in hand cycling with team USA. The Paralympic Games are a major international multi-sport event involving athletes with a range of disabilities. The games are held almost immediately following the respective Olympic Games in the same facilities.

With the right training, equipment, and performance, Travis hopes to garner the right international experience and make podium in 2019, a necessary step on the road to 2020. His current training schedule reflects the intensity, rigor, and commitment he cultivated when training for the 2000 and 2004 Paralympic games. Four AM wake-up calls to cycle in dark frosty 30 degrees weather, V02 max intervals in the pouring pacific northwest rain, and 3-hour sessions on an indoor trainer are some of the strategies Travis is pursuing for weekly gains.

As with any other world-class sporting event, quality equipment doesn’t come cheap. This is especially true in Paralympic sports where a handful of key vendors control a highly concentrated supply. A world-class handcycle with a single set of racing wheels costs over $20,000. Travis hopes to raise enough funds is he can purchase the right equipment and attend the required events to put himself on the road to Tokyo for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games!

Join the team and donate now to help Travis fill his funding gap!

World Cup #2 complete! I achieved another 6th place finish by only an inch or so to the fifth place finisher. Thank you again for your support! It’s amazing how far we’ve come in such short order.

We fly home on Monday afternoon. Next up is the national championships at the end of June which is the tryouts for this year’s World Championships.

To my amazing supporters- I placed 6th in the world today! Huge improvement over last year and I could NOT have done it without all of you. Thank you!

We fly Ostend in a little over a day for World Cup 2. Prayers have helped me recover from arriving here quite sick. I now have a few more days to hopefully get through this cold 100%.

Greetings from the UCI World Cup #1 in Italy! Competition begins this Thursday with the Time Trial and the Saturday for the Road Race. I have links to results on my webpage at www.gaertnergold.com/results

The Time Trial is suited for my strengths with a lot of climbing. The Road Race will be interesting with a lot of high speed (40+ mile per hour descents) technical turns and a field of 30 trying to avoid crashes.

Thank you for making this possible! This is looking like it could be a great year setting me up nicely to qualify for Tokyo 2020 next year.

I have been selected to Team USA for the 2019 World Cups 1 & 2! We leave May 5th for Italy and finish with a week in Belgium for the second World Cup. Could not have done this without your support, thank you!

As background there are 3 World Cups each year and 1 World Championships. The USA selects a team for each even independently. This is a great start to the 2019 season. In June I will try out for the World Championships which is going to be tough this year. I made one of the discretionary selection spots last year but this year they will likely not give me another one of those, so I need to qualify based on performance.

Watch for results on my website GaertnerGold.com this May!

Thank you again so very much!
