TMS Therapy for Major Depression

$2,240 of $3,000 goal

Raised by 45 people in 23 months
Hi, I'm Kim and I have suffered from major depressive disorder since I was 8 years old. I have been institutionalized 3 times for suicide attempts and still struggle constantly with my disease. My doctor and I adjust my medications multiple times each year, but my depressive episodes do not improve. I am looking to raise money for transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy. It was only approved by the FDA a few years ago, but has had amazing results. In the treatment a magnetic current is run through the patient's brain. One study in 2012 showed that out of 42 TMS clinics in the US, 58 % of people showed improvement. Out of that 58%, 37% achieved full remission from depression.

I am very lucky. I have one of the few healthcare plans in the country that covers this treatment however I will need to deal with copays and my deductible. So I am reaching out to ask for help. I don't want to die and I believe that someday my depression will kill me. Anything you can give I will be eternally grateful for. Thank you.

Final update

And we are done folks! I had my final treatment Thursday and my final TMS evaluation. Dr. Elrafei has declared my treatment a success. He wants me to stay on anti depressants but I'm on a much lower dosage then I was. I'll still need to see him once a month to be monitored and I may need occasional booster treatments but the main part is done.

I wasn't able to reach full remission, but I'm still grateful that I am able to wake up each day, take my medicine, and not feel the crushing weight of depression.

I will never stop being grateful for this feeling of hope and to all of you for making it possible. I love you.

Week 5 Update:

Well this was a hell of a week. Not gonna lie it was rough and I spent a lot of time freaking out and crying. But not depressed. No panic attacks, no depressive episode, no suicidal episode. If I had to venture a guess, this is how people a normally functioning prefrontal cortex react to an emergency. I've been focused and dealing with it.

I picked up my new car yesterday after begging and borrowing to get the money for my first month payment. I've been a loyal customer to the same dealership for 8 years so they were able to work with me on not having a down payment.

Still working on coming up with the money for my deductible. A friend of mine just offered to pay for my monthly larp so I can still go and have some fun despite the current financial crisis. The people in my life are beyond amazing.

Thank you guys for continuing to share and/or donate to this fundraiser. I am forever grateful for everything you've done. I honestly don't know if I would have survived this week if it wasn't for this treatment. I feel like a different person.

I'm actually debating going back into therapy once things calm down financially, for the first time ever for a good reason. I've been the woman with depression for my entire life. Now it's time to start learning who Kim is. I'm glad you guys are here with me while I begin to find out.

Ok so we have a kind of bad news, good news, and more bad news update.

Bad news. I got into a car accident last night. Quite literally right outside of the doctor's office. Car had to be towed and I don't know yet if it's repairable or will have to be totaled.

Good news. I handled it! I didn't have a panic attack. I did go suicidal. Yes I cried and I ranted and I may have eaten a pint of ice cream instead of a real dinner, but I handled it. You know like someone with a functional prefrontal cortex does. If I still needed any proof that this treatment worked, we have it right there. The last time I got into a car accident I had to be talked out of taking a bottle of pills. This time I am dealing with it.

Bad news part 2. I'm currently in a rental, but this is only a temp fix. If the car is repairable, I need help getting my deductible to be able to have a car to get to and from work and treatment. If the car is totaled, I need to get a new car and will still need to pay my deductible, plus the first month payment on a new car.

So I am again asking for help. It is not directly for the treatment, but without a car I can't get to treatment or work which allows me to have health insurance for treatment. So as always, if you can give, please give, if you can't please share the hell out of this. I'm on week 5 of 9 of my treatment and am having near miraculous results. I'm not willing to give up the fight now when I am so close to be healthy. I hope you guys will fight with me.
