the nepal earthquake has hit and it is not over yet.
A few days after the devastating earthquake hit central nepal with a magnitude of 7.8, we received calls from our employees asking to pick up work again.
after they arrived at our small handicraft workshop,
we heard stories of violence against women and girls in the camps and in the villages of Nepal.
Left without a roof protecting from rains and storms, they are also left vulnerable to violence particularly to trafficking and sexual violence.
As a small handicraft company, we at Bhumi Handicraft (bhumihandicraft.com) hire only women, aiming to support their livelihood, we are now standing in front of the ruins of what many called "home".
We want to help the affected communities of our employees and support them in protecting their daughters while building up communities again.
The earthquake might be over but the harm that is done to women and girls here will just increase.
therefore we are collecting donations for distributing: - - - temporary shelter (tents and tarpolin),
- hygiene education with culturally sensitive distribution of sanitary pads and desinfectants,
- deploy local peer educators to educate on risks of violence and help communities respond adequately
- set up protection mechanisms with local women groups in Dhading, Nuwakot and Sindhupalchowk (some of the most affected districts)
and we will report to you in detail on our website how we help with first response, educate families and communities about the risks many women and girls face after a disaster and rebuild with them the safe places they lost within seconds.

We have tirelessly been working on disseminating donations and connecting with women's organisations, suppliers for materials, people who want to work, volunteer and get training.
Finally the wholesale market comes back to life and we can purchase materials to make more pads and engage more women.
We even get calls from people ready to work and do anything to support. The first new workers, we will meet tomorrow.
On the photos you see some of the more familiar faces at Bhumi, Abishek and Bijen are collecting materials and deliver them on the motorbike, the nepali way of transporting many things (e.g. goats).
The other is Shova our supervisor extraordinaire. She manages her entire family at home and is the most important person in our workshop with an eagle eye for detail and quality.
we are thankful to work with these amazing people and with great organisations like LOOM Nepal, that runs their 10.000 mothers campaign reaching highly affected areas.

after some hiccups with the site and some donations not going through:

please do not give up on Nepal, the people here need support more than ever.
a storm hit Kathmandu yesterday, leaving 3 people dead as they were outside. Additionally, we heard that an entire hill fell into the Kalikandaki river taking all the houses on it and building a dam of 200 metres piling up the river behind it and threatening the villages below as it is about to burst.
people in nepal, have definitely not been over the earthquakes yet.
One organisation we visited, is in need of many mosquito nets as their visits have shown children and babies covered in mosquito bites. The risk of contracting malaria besides the pending risks of cholera in the camps due to lack of hygiene increase day by day.
currently, we are supporting not only the reusable pads, but also try to gather more funding for mosquito nets.
One net costs up to 350 NPR (about 3 Euro, 3.5 USD) and can protect a child from insects and mosquitos.
you can help many children with your donation to decrease their suffering.
We are additionally working on solutions for the coming monsoon which makes stable shelter more than necessary, we will keep you posted about more things to come.
thanks for your support so far

Sorry for the late update, even though the earth has come to stand still (for now), we are insanely busy with supporting women all over the affected areas. the second earthquake has just spread the need to hygiene in more areas and increased suffering for the women who already lost everything in the first earthquake.
Even among all this uncertainty and fear our Bhumi women come to sew sanitary pads which become part of health programmes, support kits and awareness campaigns for women.
Our women feel like they are contributing to helping the ones most in need even though they themselves sleep still in tents outside, support their own family members turning to their medical and psychological needs after suffering from traumatic events themselves.
Please keep supporting us and our future plans for the women and girls of Nepal.

Unfortunately another earthquake hit Nepal again with a magnitude of 7.3. All our women at Bhumi Handicraft went home to be with their loved ones and make sure everyone is safe. Our women are bringing their children to work because schools remain closed and they have no one who takes care of them. We will establish a place where they can play, learn and be safe together for the time being.
The last earthquake happened during our sanitary pad training and due to regular practice on earthquake safety, all women moved to an open space on time. we will continue the workshop and the production when everyone feels ready to return to normal. our women, just like many others are resilient and keen to support the villages most affected.
stay safe!
