Help us transform Zimbabwe's troubles into a bright future for its beautiful people in need.

Many agree that Zimbabwe is the most beautiful country in all of Africa.  With Victoria Falls, one of the great natural wonders of the world, vast lush rain forests, and verdant plains, Zimbabwe is truly a place of natural beauty.  And there may be no other country in all of Africa so well suited for agriculture of all kinds, with natural rainfall sufficient for vast unirrigated fertile farmlands.  But the greatest of Zimbabwe's assets is her inspired and spiritual people.

The Transcendental Meditation (TM) program represents the profound revival of the deepest essence of Yoga.  Over 300 published Scientific studies have demonstrated that this effortless and profoundly enjoyable practice employed for just a few minutes twice a day enriches the lives of people from all nationalities, religious backgrounds, and walks of life with greater intelligence, creativity, productivity, social responsibility, and even the transformation of society as a whole.

In the past, the Transcendental Meditation Program was well established in Zimbabwe, and many of its citizens benefited through increased clarity of thinking, creativity, and productivity.

Here is a brief history of our TM organization in Zimbabwe.  Like Zimbabwe, all nations in our world today have stories with many glorious events but many difficult times as well.  It seems important to outline some of the difficult details so you can really gain perspective on the way the TM program has been and will be a tremendous force for good in Zimbabwe.
TM first made an appearance in Zimbabwe in the late ‘70s a very dark time for what was then Rhodesia, in its violent struggles to establish an independent government.  Our international organization based at the time in Switzerland was keenly aware of places in the world where armed conflict was posing a tremendous threat to all life on earth.  A group of teachers of TM was sent from South Africa, and soon many Zimbabwean citizens were instructed.  Eventually, 70 new meditators learned the advanced TM Sidhis techniques.  The research had begun then on the effects created by groups practicing these advanced techniques, and now over 20 published studies have documented the reliable scientific effect advanced group practice has on war violence and crime.  Shortly after the 70 people began their daily group practice indicators of growing peace began to appear.  In order to strengthen the effect, a second group of advanced TM practitioners was sent to Zimbabwe from the United States as part of a global effort implemented in several trouble spots around the world at the same time.  From the first day of the project, there was a lessening of tension and a reduction in the death rate.

Because these events could be statistically isolated in relation to the implementation of the group practice of this “peace technology”, very conservative international scientific journals published the descriptions of this and other “peace technology” projects.  Scientific conclusions hold statistical probability as paramount, and this research found that the likelihood of the results being due to chance, and not directly related to the organized group practice was less that one chance in 100,000—an unprecedented finding in any experiment in social science.

For example, During the period that the groups were in Zimbabwe the death rate dropped by 40%, a sharp reversal of the escalating trend which had started in September.  A senior commissioner of the country commented that there was a “calmness" out in the strife areas which he was not able to explain.
Information that only came out much later from former leaders of the freedom fighters is now tremendously inspiring.  In secret, a massive final attack was planned to begin in September 1978 which had as its goal to eliminate all opposition to the freedom movement through large-scale and unrestrained slaughter.  But shortly after the commencement of this campaign, a sudden calmness came about. Past members of the freedom fighter organization who have come forward now remember that no one understood why none of their people went forward with the well orchestrated plans for incredible violence.

During this time, significant progress was made in the Lancaster House talks in London, between the Smith government and the leaders of the freedom movement.  A solution was reached and the plan for the transfer of power was arrived at.  While the conflict continued until the end of the first quarter of 1979, the final transformation to peace was created by the momentum of this intervention using the technology of consciousness.  Before mid-1979 the country was at peace

TM educational services for the public continued and expanded for some time after that.  Unfortunately, all attempts after this to persuade the government’s new leaders to implement the permanent peace creating group were not successful, and now there has been effectively no TM organization presence in Zimbabwe since the beginning of the century.  Not surprisingly, in the absence of any permanent technology for peace and prosperity, things took a downturn for Zimbabwe again.

In the late-1990s the white family farmlands began to be forcibly redistributed amid a severe drought in the region.  The police and military were instructed not to stop the invasion of white-owned farms by the so-called 'war veterans' and youth militia—essentially marauding looters and hooligans working under the tacit support of the government.  The government’s hand in this did not go undetected, which brought Zimbabwe into headlong conflict with the International Monetary Fund.  The subsequent collapse of the Zimbabwean monetary system led to mass migration out of the country, a complete collapse of the farming industry, and a debilitating food shortage turning the "breadbasket of Africa" into one of Africa's most food insecure states.

But now again things are about to change for the better.

Early this year, Kulani Nyoni and his wife Thembi Mtshali opened the first TM center in 17 years.  It is strategically located in Bulawayo, a geographically central major city, and home of Zimbabwe’s National University of Science and Technology—the nation’s "think tank".  We are officially registered as a non-profit foundation the “Maharishi Foundation Trust”, and plans to teach thousands of Zimbabweans the technologies of consciousness so critical for untying the knots of social and economic discord are well underway.

Kulani returns to his native Zimbabwe after several years of education and service as a faculty member at the prestigious Maharishi Institute in Johannesburg.  He and his wife are well established in the teaching of Transcendental Meditation, and they are very skilled in business and promotional techniques.  Kulani has previously established his own NGOs offering intrapreneurial education so timely and sought after all over Africa, and he has a very successful online accounting service.  Kulani has been very fortunate to have personally mentored under Dr. Vicki Broome, the TM organization’s premiere lecture trainer, who has conducted official teaching proficiency seminars for thousands of Teachers of TM all around the world.

Beginning the movement again from nothing is challenging.  Kulani and Thembi have taken a great leap of faith in using their own family savings to set the project in motion.  Their efforts should be very sustainable in a short time, but due to the long-standing financial difficulties in the country people cannot afford to pay much to start TM.  This means that other funding sources must come forward until the numbers of people beginning TM provide a working income for Kulani, Thembi, and their two children.

Currently, long-established contacts are being optimized by the couple with educational institutions, the military, and NGOs providing relief and career networking for many citizens. The plan is to utilize these institutions to establish permanent groups of TM and advanced technique practitioners, and not only replicate the effects created in the 1970s, but to implement positive change on a much broader level by continuously sustained groups.  In addition to the reduction of war violence and violent crime, published research on this consciousness technology in other countries has also demonstrated increased economic stability and growth, reduced numbers of emergency medical incidents and accidental death, reduced non-violent crime, and an increase in many positive trends in society.  We invite you to follow our efforts and see how things in Zimbabwe recover, and the nation begins to flourish toward new heights in the fulfillment of its unlimited potential.

My wife and I oversee the advancement of the activities of teaching the Transcendental Meditation in Zimbabwe.  We will deposit 100% of all donated funds into Zimbabwe Maharishi Trust account that is set up here in the United States which is established solely for the purposes laid out in this letter. All disbursements from the account will be directly transferred to "Invincible Africa", a South African based non-profit foundation which provides course fee scholarships so the people in Zimbabwe can learn the Transcendental Meditation technique.

Whether a dollar or $2 or $10 or $100 or whatever you like, we will appreciate anything you can give to create peace and harmony in our lovely Zimbabwe. Our goal is to help 1,000 Zimbabweans to learn TM in the next 24 months as a build-up to the process of building peace through creating coherence groups in Africa.
