Dad's Back Surgery

Donation protected
As many of you know back on October 18th my Dad was in the hospital due to falling. He initially was diagnosed with 3 herniated disks (T7, T10, and T12) and they believed this was the source of his excruciating pain. Unfortunately because of this pain he was unable to work from October until mid- January.

He had 2 rounds of epidural steroid injections in which he had to undergo general anesthesia. These were supposed to relieve some- if not most- of his pain, but unfortunately they did not. During this process my Dad found out that he only had short term disability at work so he had to return even with the pain.

He we went to see another specialist in January who advised he would need another MRI done and this is when they realized that not only did he have the herniated disks, but he also had a compression fracture that had been untreated and he was diagnosed with cervical stenosis.

This brought some relief because we were desperately wanting some relief for my Dad's pain. He was then scheduled for a Kyphoplasty to relieve some pressure from the compression fracture. Dad underwent the procedure on 2/15. The surgeon was extremely happy with the results and was sure that this would give my Dad almost "immediate" relief. On February 17th my Dad went back into the hospital because of excruciating pain and not being able to breathe. He was released that night, but sent home with more pain medication and instructed to come back in if he was still having issues breathing.

He spoke with the spine surgeon on Monday, February 20th and there has now been a new surgery scheduled to focus on the stenosis as this is now what they believe is causing the pain. The surgery he will undergo is an Anterior Cervical Fusion and this will be the most extensive of all. This surgery will take 4-5 hours and 2 surgeons will be operating. This surgery is schedule for 3/9 and to understand the urgency- if he were to fall before getting it there would be a serious chance of my father being paralyzed. Once the surgery is performed my Dad will be on a feeding tube and ventilator for 2-7 days depending on the complications.

I am opening up this account because my Dad will for sure be in the hospital for 2-7 days and then the recovery process will take up to 6 months. Depending on complications he can be out of work for up to 3 months. We are hopeful that it will not be that long, but also with his previous history we want to be prepared. His COPD is the most concerning factor because we do not want it to inflame anymore then it already has.

My Dad is a very prideful man, but we are asking for help because out of the time he will have off only 2 weeks will be paid for since he used up his short term disability from October to January. All of his reserves and savings are gone because of the procedures he has already had to undergo and we pray that he will have a job once all of this is done. It is a serious concern that he could lose the house if he is unable to work and pay the bills so we are trying to take one stress away.

We appreciate anything that is donated and if you cannot donate we ask for all the prayers we can get during this difficult time. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions at all.
