The Facts

Daniel Byrne has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer (adenocarcinoma) of the pancreas and liver.  Dan is 33 and the diagnosis has come as a tremendous shock to him and to all his family and friends.

So today the fight begins in earnest and the gloves come off whilst Dan deals with a truly shit hand. We’re not interested in shitistics, this is about Dan.

Who is Dan?

Daniel, often known as Dan, or by his nickname Byrnsie, had a dedicated career as an outdoor adventure guide, helping the personal development of others.  He later became Head Instructor Trainer at Outward Bound Australia.  Countless trainee guides can recall their special Dan moment. A moment where his encouragement allowed them to rise to the challenge, believe in their own power and adopt his enthusiasm.  He delivered wisdom with a sense of humour and laughter followed.

Daniel lives life to the full. When he’s not enjoying time with family and friends, his home is the outdoors, camping, fishing and hiking with his dog, Boof.  Despite his talent, everyone has their undoing trait - no one can get a truck bogged like Dan can.

If you know or have met Daniel, this is your opportunity to step forward and say thanks. If you have never met Daniel, this is your opportunity to support an exceptional outdoorsman who has contributed his heart and soul to countless youngsters and trainees.

Where we are at

Daniel is starting the biggest fight of his life, FOR his life.  He is getting a port-a-cath inserted so that he can start receiving chemotherapy and other drugs.  Using this stuff to fight cancer is a pretty shit way to start the New Year but without it, worse.

What we want to do with the funds

Daniel’s family want to find Daniel THE BEST integrative-oncologist, whether that is in Australia or overseas. Heck if the best integrative-oncologist lives in an igloo in the Artic, they’ll head there!

Dan has a lot on his mind right now and is in pain.  Additional funds will provide Daniel with the best cancer fighting organic foods, nutrients, counseling and general holistic care whilst he deals with the chemo and stress of the diagnosis.

Healing takes many pathways. Daniel wants to spend time with his family and see friends to enjoy some peaceful happy time but he also has some places in mind that he has never had time to visit.  Knowing he can afford to go now will give Dan a positive goal to look forward to. Dan is hell bent on visiting Horizontal Falls in the Kimberley. An amazing natural wonder for an amazing nature man.

If you know Daniel, we’d love you to share a personal anecdote of your time with him.  Dan just won’t believe how much of a positive impact he has had and this is your opportunity to let him know. It will also let others who don’t know Dan, understand what a special cause this is.

The Final Word

Dan has always been huge hearted giver who has not always found it easy to be a receiver.  But now is the time to, pay it forward (or back, depending on what way you see it)...and for Daniel to learn how to receive gracefully as a part of his journey to healing.

Dear All,

A most wonderful man, Daniel Byrne, passed away at 7am on Friday the 28th of June.

If it had to be, Dan wanted to be at home in Albury surrounded by his loving family and with his dog by his side, and it was as Dan had requested.

Dan was so incredibly brave as he played his last hand. Open-minded, big-hearted and gentle to the end.

Daniel was a bit unsure when we first pitched the idea of starting a fund raiser for him. What he had not imagined is that along with your generosity, came the opportunity to share so many wonderful stories and memories. He was an unassuming man and Dan was able to read and learn of the profound impact his life had had on so many in such a short time. It was an incredible gift for him and his family to know how loved he was by so many.

Thank you to everyone from Daniel, thank you for reading his story, thank you for donating and adding comments. His family are still going to go to Horizontal Falls one day in Daniels honour.

Finally, a common thread in the comments about Dan was that people came away from meeting him, feeling good about themselves and their potential. We can keep his legacy alive by doing the same. And we too can encourage time spent in nature, playing in the mud, fishing, or messing around in boats.

Daniel we salute you.

It is a little bit ironic being on a social media platform, posting about Daniel.

That’s because if you ever tried to get in contact with Daniel over social media you would know, that you would have way better luck to pick up the phone or knock on his door. He is like that.

He doesn’t have twitter or Instagram, in fact even on Facebook a post from Daniel would be a rarity and he isn’t really much for posting or talking about himself. His truck maybe could warrant a rare peep from Daniel on social media, but as for him, he’d rather live in the moment, a rare gift in this day and age.

However, since Daniel was diagnosed late last year, he has been overwhelmed by the support that he has received, the messages, the memories shared and the overwhelming love that has poured in from the very platforms Daniel was never too occupied with.

Daniel would like to thank everyone so much for their contributions and their messages of love. He never thought that it would be this big. But it is, because of the impact that Daniel has wherever he has tread. Who knew such a little guy could have such a huge and deep footprint.

A family trip to Horizontal Falls has been booked. Daniel is hoping very much to see it, but more than that, he would like to thank you all.

Try make people smile, whenever you can.

We are all very grateful for the help of the nurses and staff at Albury Cancer Centre for taking care of Daniel. He has remained incredibly brave throughout what has been a roller coaster of pain and pain medication and finally a surgical procedure to lower his pain level.

Daniel has now been discharged and is now at home!! His pain has been minimal, his first round of chemo has finished and he is happy to be free.

We really appreciate all the support and now that his pain is manageable and the chemo has started, Daniel can start to really fight this diagnosis with the support from his family and friends.

Thank you to all of you that have donated. This means Daniel and his family can concentrate on fighting this instead of worrying about money and the cost of getting the best treatment.

We are still yet to reach his goal, but we are not too far off and it has really been an incredible testament to Daniel about how well this fund has gone.

Life is for living.
Hugs are for giving.
Cancer is for kicking hard.
And never giving up.

So to keep this campaign active it calls for an update.

So, Daniel is still a big hearted funny, giving person, but he is now being that person in the Cancer Ward. He would love to be home with his family and his dog Boof but it is better for his pain management for him to be in hospital.

He starts chemo in a couple of days and he resting himself and preparing for that.

It should also be shared that Daniel has been overwhelmed by the support that he has had over these last few days. It really has been unbelievable.

Its going to take so much stress off his family and Dan whilst they deal with this still new prognosis. It will be so healing for everyone to not have to worry about money, as giving someone the best care does add up. And that's what we want for Dan, the very best.

Please keep sharing, and thank you to everyone for your generosity as its making a difference, especially for Daniel to realize how much of an impact on so many people for just being who he is.

And finally a big thank you to all the donations that have come in from those who don't know Daniel. Like any good product guarantee, I can tell you he is absolutely worth it!

I'm going to add a photo. But not one of him in hospital but one from just before he went to hospital. It's a photo showing Dan where he is most happy and where he wants to get back to most. Sleeping in the outdoors, with his loyal dog Boof.
