Chasing an Olympic Dream

$1,568 of $2,000 goal

FULL SPEED AHEAD - That is the only way I know how to go.  I am 53 years of age and I am working to defy odds and become an Olympic speedskater.

Speedskating takes an immense amount of sacrifice.  You have to be focused and totally committed if you want to succeed at the highest level of this sport.

I am working to make the 2018 Olympic team and go to Pyeongchang, Korea to represent the United States. I qualified to skate the US Olympic Trials in January in the 5000 and 10000 meter distances during the 2016-2017 speedskating season. I am asking for your support to enable me to train full-time and to make history.

My goal is to raise enough money to make a temporary move to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to train full time at the Pettit National Ice Center. In the past I have commuted the ~300 miles from Champaign, IL to Milwaukee, WI to train 3-4 days a week. Intense training time is one of the keys to the success of this endeavor.

I am training six days a week, usually for 3 hours at a time. Being able to train full-time at the Olympic Training Center in Milwaukee would be ideal.

I hope you will donate and join me in fulfilling my dream.  Being age 53 and making an Olympic speedskating team will be history making. Together we can defy the odds!!

8 days until the Olympic Trials begin.

I had a nice visit with my four kids and three significant others on Christmas Eve. We had an simple lunch, a lot of laughs, and a gift exchange. I had a moderate workout yesterday evening. I am starting to feel the benefits of tapering. The sense of strength is intoxicating.

Today I had a wonderful Christmas morning, then this afternoon I got back in my car and drove back to Milwaukee.

It felt like I was living a different life for a day and a half.

I am back in Milwaukee for final preparations for the trials. It will be a big day tomorrow of fully immersing myself back into the training. Seven important days of focus and attention to detail ahead.

9 days until the start of the Olympic Trials.

The goal of my 5K today was to dial back the speed a little and skate a technically excellent race. I fell a little short of the goal. I definitely skated better that the last two weekends. My coach, Jeff Klaiber, is confident we will work out these technical issues over the coming week.

After the time trial we had a 1-hour ice practice. We worked on the problems that surfaced in my 5K. I skated better/faster in the practice...while working on the tweaks. Gotta do what is necessary to peak in 9 days.

After practice I made the 3.5 hour commute back to my home in IL. I will be here for approximately two days. Christmas party with my kids and their significant others tomorrow! I am really looking forward to seeing them. I will drive back to Milwaukee on Christmas Day to be ready for practice on the morning of the 26th.

Thank you everyone for your continued support!

10 days until the start of the Olympic Trials.

Today was an easy day. Light training on the ice this morning, race prep, followed by spin bike, and ab work. I had a massage and ice bath this afternoon.

Tomorrow I am skating my last 5K before the trials.

11 days until the Olympic Trials. Today was a very busy day: stretching, morning training on ice, spin bike workout, ab workout, ice bath, lunch, stretching, off ice drills, afternoon training on ice, slide board, another ice bath, and a late dinner. The results today were better than my coach, Jeff Klaiber, expected. It is always nice when you can exceed your coaches expectations.
