The Right Book
$5,255 of $3,000 goal
“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” -Maya Angelou
My name is Samuel Pearce, and I teach English to sixty-seven amazing eighth graders at a public school in Bushwick.
Far too many New York City students do not have adequate access to great books, and I am just one of many teachers who spend a significant part of their income on materials. I am fortunate to have received publicity, through my work in fashion (as Sam Worthen), and I am hoping to convert it into books for my kids.
Reading fluently is the most powerful tool for lifetime success. My students have to read 20 minutes and reflect in 20 lines of writing every night. While some have books at home, most rely on our classroom library.
Reluctant readers need the right book. So far, I have seen four transform into hour-a-night readers through discovering Harry Potter and Oscar Wao. I know my students’ interests, reading levels, and what books each has liked and disliked. When they trade me finished books for new ones, I ask them to describe the book they want to read next. Then I search the web, Barnes & Noble, my brain, and other teachers’ to find and buy the closest match.
I have increased our library from 92 titles to 210. However, using only my income, I cannot keep all of my students reading books that keep them inspired to read.
We need your help!
Every $15 dollar donation buys a book.
67 students x 3 books each x $15 = $3,015
So, I have set $3,000 as our goal.
In addition to independent reading books, this campaign will fund classroom sets, which allow us to study one novel as a class. Thanks to an anonymous donor, we now have 28 copies of Of Mice and Men. Having 28 allows every student to read during class. If we raise enough to buy 67 copies, every student will be able to read the book for homework, and annotate in pencil.
If you have any questions, please contact me through this website, and I will reply as soon as possible.
All donors will recieve a thank you note from one of my students, starting Monday, when we get back to school.
I am deeply grateful for your support, and I know that my students will be too. Thanks to you all, we have reached and exceeded our goal.
I am now closing the campaign. There are countless other teachers who need materials for their students. If you would like to contribute, please go to http://www.donorschoose.org/ and read their stories.
To show you what your contributions are funding, I have created a page on Instagram, @therightbook. Every time I purchase books, I will photograph and post them, with titles, price, and the balance remaining in the fund. I will also post pictures of our library, so you can see it grow.
Thank you notes are in order and will be on their way soon. If you would like to receive a handwritten note, please send your address through this website by Wednesday. We will thank everyone else via e-mail.
I can’t wait to take my kids’ requests and place our first book order.
Hello everyone! Thank you so much for your support. Yes, we would greatly appreciate donations of books. When I go back to school on Monday, I will figure out shipping logistics with my principal and contact all who have offered. And yes, additional money will go to buy books for other classrooms. Seventh graders, too, borrow books from our library, and as it grows, more students will be able to use it.
I also have some young adult books I would be willing to donate. Reading is a great gift and it's fantastic that you want to encourage your students.
I just wanted to say that what you are doing for these kids it's something amazing, so thank you so much for being such a caring teacher and for doing all that you are doing for these kids. They are very lucky to have you as their teacher. Keep up the good work and wish you all the best.
Have you introduced the kids to Madeline L'Engle?
I have the complete series of Harry Potter, the complete series of C.S. Lewis' The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe as well as other that are practically brand new that I can send. Just need an address and I would be more than happy to donate.
If we have books that we would like to donate, where can those be mailed to? Or are you just doing donations?

I am in my fourth year of college to become a high school English teacher and I want to tell you that you have inspired me more than you could ever imagined. What you are doing for your students is beautiful and one day I hope I can be just a great and caring of a teacher that you are. It's obvious that you care for your students and want nothing but the greatest for them. Thank you Mr. Pearce for being a role model for not only future teachers, but for "normal" people also.
