Therapy Horse Needs Prosthetic Leg!

Tax deductible
Hurricane Irma Rescue Horse turned Therapy Horse URGENTLY needs prosthetic leg or faces euthanasia. It's a misconception that horses with leg issues need to be put to sleep. With the prosthetic device, horses can live on with a wonderful quality of life.

3 year old Bet On A Star, fondly known as 81 was taken in by Hopes, Dreams and Horses (a non-profit equine assisted therapy and rescue center in Jupiter, Florida)  after his ranch in Clewiston, Fl was destroyed in Hurricane Irma. He had been stranded, in standing water for days with his owner desperate to get him the medical care needed. 81 had contracted an often fatal, waterborne disease called Pythiosis.

Four surgeries and more than 9 months later, the unthinkable happened. All was going well, the disease was gone but a cast complication resulted in the loss of his hoof. 81 was by now a very important team member of Hopes, Dreams and Horses.

Sometimes a hoof can grow back but in 81’s case that was not to be. Realizing there were only two options, euthanasia or a limb replacement we immediately set out to see if this would be possible. The answer is not only Yes! but that these horses go on to live almost normal lives, they are able to run and play and go out just like any other horse! The only difference is their leg has to be cleaned and powdered daily just like anyone with a prosthetic. 81 has been approved as a great candidate for the surgery by Dr. Ted Vlahos, the world expert on this procedure with 60 successful surgeries to date. Many of his patients have been living with a prosthetic for 15 years!

The cost for this surgery, including two months in the hospital while he heals and the prosthetic itself is estimated to cost at least $25,000.00.  Other costs that the non profit did not budget for due to unforeseen complications such as bedding, medication, daily bandages and outstanding vet bills will all go toward the amount we are raising.

It is URGENT we raise the funds now... Bet On A Star can’t go much longer without having the surgery. All donations are tax deductible, you will receive a receipt when you contribute and we'll keep you posted on his progress.

Why I'm Doing This:

I’ve been there every step of the way for 81’s journey. I’ve met countless horses in my life and while volunteering with HDH over the last 20 years. It is rare to come across a horse that stands out like our Bet On A Star…81’s AQHA registered name, “Bet on A Star” says it all….he IS a Star!

At such a young age he has mastered life, teaching us about resilience, gratitude, compassion, acceptance and love. His will to live has inspired others to not give up. His genuine friendship toward everyone he meets, spreads love. With each person he impacts, they leave the farm stronger, happier and at peace. The ripple effect of positivity he has had in our community is priceless. The world cannot afford to lose this gift, 81 deserves to live on. With your help he will soon be an ambassador to a whole new demographic: those in our community with limb replacements. I am imagining a child with a new limb, looking up and hugging 81 or a veteran struggling with PTSD receiving the gift of love and hope.

This GoFundMe is more than just about a limb replacement for a horse, it is about all the lives he will impact for years to come.

I cannot express the gratitude Hopes, Dreams and Horses and myself will feel if you will join our campaign, share and contribute to saving Bet On A Star (81) and through him, countless others.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,  Brittany Brett
