The Great Escape Fund

This fundraiser is being done to support one of our friends who is leaving a dangerous and abusive situation. The following is an open letter from them, explaining their circumstances in their own words.

Hello. You might know me. I’m sorry for being unable to tell you my name, but all of my friends advised against it, as doing so would put me in danger.


For the last ten years, I’ve been unable to leave a physically and emotionally abusive situation, and things have grown worse. I am once again in fear for my life and safety. There are not words to list all the things I have endured. I have been beaten. I have been gaslit to the point where I cannot remember two full years of my life. I am denied access to medical care and pushed out of my space in the house so my partner can cheat on me. I have no control over my own body. From small things, like being denied haircuts, to being repeatedly forced into group sex. My partner rapes me without using any method of contraception and then makes me sleep beside him.


I average leaving the house about once a month. I am not allowed to have a method of communication with the world other than the internet, and even that is monitored. I have been deprived of a phone and a car, as well as basic income. I have not been able to keep a job in the last few years because of several debilitating health issues that have gone untreated. I also cannot get on disability or medicare, because my partner has not allowed me to renew my legal ID. He’s made it very hard for me to leave. At this point, however, I would honestly rather be homeless than stay here any longer.


For the first time in a long while, I’ve been able to make friends that my partner did not know, and have social interaction that he did not control. I’ve found some people who are willing to help me try to leave, but they cannot fully support me in my current condition. We’re going to need some help to actually make this work.


Since I currently have no money of my own, and no way to make money until I leave, getting out is going to be the hardest part.


I need transportation. Money for a phone, food, and a few months of rent until I can get on disability or find a job that I can still hold despite my health problems.


I hate to beg. But I have no choice. And if you are willing to help me, many members of the Steter Network and the greater fandom community have agreed to try to give you something in return.
