Recovery, Repairs+Restoration at The Box SF!

$4,480 of $30,000 goal

Raised by 66 people in 3 months

As you may or may not know, I spent the last three years of my life and all of my life savings and retirement to build my dream Letterpress Shop and Store in San Francisco selling rare printed history. It's beautiful and unique and there is really nothing like it in North America.

Well, we had a major accident here in THE PRESSROOM AND MERCANTILE AT THE BOX SF on Monday afternoon May 5th, as over 100 gallons of pure, thick sewage poured into the Pressroom and Mercantile as well as our basement from our toilets due to a back-flow caused by a sewer cleaning crew outside of our building. They of course are taking zero responsibility so far, and my insurance does not cover any of this type of accident.

As damage and repairs are now approaching well over $60,000 to 70,000, I am doing my best to hold it together and remain stable and figure a way through this.

Hopefully, The Mercantile and Pressroom here at The Box SF can reopen in June, sans bathrooms, if all goes well this next few weeks. Full repairs will take a few months as both bathrooms must be gutted now and additional mold and spores work will be ongoing. You can't risk mold growing near vintage paper and printed items. I am determined to get through this and do everything right.

I would appreciate any and all support that anyone can offer as these insured types of damages are crushing me and the store is currently closed and not selling except some online sales.

Finally, I wanted to take a moment to thank all of our friends, customers and followers from around the world, for all the comments, calls, messages and well wishes! It takes a lot to knock me off course, so I have been working hard, and staying diligent to insure that not only will everything be repaired, but it will be even better than before!

I will continue to work to make this the greatest vintage Letterpress Shop, Ephemera, Graphic Design, Packaging, Poster, Rare Book and Advertising Store on Earth selling “All Things Printed!” in an 1850’s General Store Environment. Our items have already survived a century or two and I will continue to work to save them.

Thank you to everyone for tagging, sharing, reposting and following our story and this unexpected left turn!

Thank you for considering a donation to help us recover.

Well sadly we have not been able to raise much money to recover from this despite all our kind donations. I have maxed out my credit cards with nearly $75,000 in out of pocket costs, and the city has of course denied our claim saying, "You have a great case against us, but fighting these things is just what we do!" Their attitude is people cannot afford to fight them long term and most cases just fall apart. I think it's pathetic to be honest. Anyway, if you feel like spreading the word, helping us raise money to recover I would be very grateful!

Be well! Come visit us soon if you can, or shop online at TheBoxSF.com or on our Instagram as @theboxsf

I wanted to share an update with you!

We reopened last week and tomorrow morning we begin restorations and construction on our bathrooms that were both destroyed and gutted by the city crew!

We have raised almost $10,000 of our $70,000 in repairs and we thank you for the support. Our credit cards are creaking but we are moving forward.

I am determined to put this behind me and stay in business.

Thank you again for helping us.

Since we are still collecting donations, please share this campaign with your networks and also come see us!

We are finished with the main cleaning, we are free of e-coli, mold and all moisture and bacteria. we are now over $70,000 in repairs. I cannot tell you what your donations and support means to us. I am maxing out credit cards to get reopen soon and it appears headed for a lengthy legal fight with the City and County of San Francisco who are denying responsibility so far.

Please share our campaign out and spread the word. I am doing my best here to remain stable and focused on getting reopened by June 10th if not before!
