The Brighton High School Hockey team is looking to raise funds for the Wight Family.

Tragdey struck the Wight Family as they were driving to a hockey tournament in Denver from Salt Lake City. The family was in an auto accident, Bob and Dawn, the parents and our beloved friends, both passed away from injuries sustained in the accident. Kyle and Karson both sustained injuries, but are expected to make a full recovery. They are currently in a hospital in the Denver area.

The Wight family has made an huge impact on the Utah Hockey Community as the boys have played on several teams in the Salt Lake and Boise areas for many years.  Bob and Dawn were a staple in the stands and around the rink. They were friends to all the other parents and players, always ready to shake your hand with a smile and share a crazy laugh. There will be a space in the stands and our hearts that can never be filled.

Brighton Hockey would be very greatful if we could help these two amazing boys by taking care of some of the expenses that are sure to pile up while they make their way though this tragic event.  All funds raised will go to the family, to take care of medical expenses and help care for the boys.

Please help spread the word and contribute.

On behalf of Brighton Hockey, Kyle and Karsen Wight, and the entire Utah hockey community, we want to thank you so much for participating in this funding effort. When Brighton Hockey set this up, we hoped that we would be able to collect a few thousand dollars to help with the final expenses of our dear friends Bob and Dawn Wight. The generosity of the hockey community locally and, indeed, nationally, has been overwhelming and touched everyone involved deeply. We received donations from all across the nation and from hockey organizations like the Colorado Junior Eagles, Littleton Hawks, Arvada Hockey Squirts, San Diego Junior Gulls, Viewmont Hockey, My Hockey Rankings, Vail Mountaineers, Montana Thunderblades, Colorado Thunderbirds, the Binghampton Junior Senators, Primrose School in Texas, the Omaha AAA 14U team, Copper Hills High School, the Western States Hockey League, the Rocky Mountain Roughriders, NCYHA Squirt B, University of Denver Squirt A, Skyline High School Hockey, the Salt Lake Stars, the Fairbanks Alaska Ice Dogs, the Esmark Stars, the Korth Rebels, and Logan Painting. We had over 1,100 individual donations from caring players and families. A local player, Pyper Van der Sluys, organized a fundraiser at Juan Diego High School from students that raised almost $1,300.00. The Utah Hockey Association held a benefit dinner that netted $22,400. While the monetary contributions will provide much needed support for the boys, the love and dedication those donations reflect means just as much.

The boys have recovered well from the physical injuries suffered and we’re thankful to say both are back playing hockey. This has been critical to their emotional and mental recovery as the game and their teammates provide a much-needed support system. The boys have been placed in the custody of Derek and Brenda Pond, parents of one of Karsen’s teammates, and the Ponds other children Tyler and McKay have grown to love them like true brothers. The emotional recovery will take time and patience, but the boys are strong and the Ponds are ideal and caring role models and we are hopeful for the future. The money that was donated has been placed in trusts for the boys benefit, and no money has been spent or will be spent that is not directly for the well-being of the boys. This money has provided valuable security until, and after, the financial issues with the trucking company involved in the accident are resolved.

The hockey community can be proud for how it rallied around these boys even though the vast majority never met them or their parents. There is perhaps no better lasting tribute to the memories of Dawn and Bob Wight than to show the rest of the country the internal strength of the hockey community. Thank you again for participating and improving the lives of Kyle and Karsen Wight.

Ryan Larsen,
Brighton Trustee.

Thank you all for your donations. Here is an update about how the money will be withdrawn and distributed in the short term. Short term custody has been granted by the Third Judicial District Court of Utah to Brenda and Derrick Pond. Another hearing, which may result in a longer grant of custody, is set for December, 2016.

In the interim, the Ponds have expenses relating to transportation of the boys home, final expenses for the Wights, day-to-day expenses of the boys, and other ancillary costs.

To facilitate these needs in the short term, the creator of the GoFundMe campaign has asked Ms. Pond for an assessment of immediate necessary expenses. Once received, the creator will withdraw necessary funds and forward them directly to Brenda Pond for benefit of the boys. Confirmation of the amount and the transfer will be included in another update.

The balance of the funds will remain in the GoFundMe account until permanent custody is finalized, a trust is established, or additional requests are made by the Ponds pursuant to a custody order.

My heart aches for these boys and their sister, Stephanie. She had never met them but was on a plane Saturday as soon as she heard about her Dad and Dawn to be with them at the hospital. I can only hope and pray that this terrible tragedy will bring together the 3 of them to have a new relationship together as a family. I love you. Mom

I am making this donation for Ellen because she does not have a computer. Ellen's late husband, Don, was your grandfather Cal's cousin. They were best friends all their lives. Cal and Lucille and Don and Ellen played music and cards together and travelled all over the world together. Ellen is heartbroken for your loss and sends her love.
