For the first time in history, an Irish cheerleading team has won a special invitation (bid) to compete in The Summit Cheerleading Championships in the USA. Following on from a European Title win in Liverpool in June 2017, Killarney’s Scorcher’s All Stars won the invitation to The Summit Cheerleading Championships, in May 2018 in Florida .
Scorchers All Stars are delighted to have Irish Central sharing their journey with their 4 million readers per month (600k+ Facebook followers and 300k+ newsletter subscribers). The club will be submitting short updates and videos documenting their journey to The Summit including information on their sponsors, their home town and county and their training schedule - which will be published on Irish Central.
Scorchers Cheerleading Club, Killarney, is owned and run by Hayley Murphy and Daniel Farkas. The Club has achieved great things in recent years and they are currently National Champions as well as European Champions in their divisions.
Cheerleading is a combination of acrobatic stunting, pyramids, gymnastic tumbling, and highly choreographed routines where synchronicity and difficulty are essential to a winning routine. It is a new, but fast-growing sport in Ireland. In December 2016, the International Olympic Committee granted cheerleading provisional recognition and the sport will become part of the Olympic Games Sports Programme 2020. Killarney Scorcher’s All Stars are dedicated to keeping Kerry at the forefront of the sports progression within Ireland.
A group of 50 will travel to Summit in May (19 athletes, their families and coaches). They will take pride in representing Kerry, and indeed Ireland, in the competition. Just under 1000 teams from over 40 different countries compete at this event and Killarney Scorchers take pride in representing Kerry, and indeed Ireland at the competition.
Scorchers All Stars won a special bid, which means they have received an invitation to compete in the Junior Worlds Championships in the USA (which is required to compete at this level of competition). The special bid includes accommodation and competition fees – however it still costs in the region of $1,788 (€1,500) to send each athlete, and the club are actively fundraising to help these athletes with costs of training, uniforms, tracksuits etc.
