The Stained Glass Project

To mark my 50th birthday on July 29, 2017, I want to raise $1000 for The Stained Glass Project(SGP). Making glass art made a huge difference in my life, and I want to pass that gift of transformation onward. My campaign runs through the month of July 2017, and the funds will go directly to the Stained Glass Project via their fiscal sponsor The Painted Bride Art Center.

I stumbled across a display of work by students from the SGP in 2010 when I missed my train and walked to Love Park, and found an exhibit of their stained glass windows at the Welcome Center. The windows were for a school in South Africa.

The donations to my 50th birthday campaign will help the group buy materials for their beautiful work, and travel to museums, galleries and cultural events in order to discover art these students otherwise might not get to experience.

Now in its 10th year, The Stained Glass Project is a volunteer-run after-school arts program which originally began at the First United Methodist Church of Germantown with Germantown High School students attending a school labeled by the Philadelphia Inquirer as “persistently dangerous."

Co-directed by artists Paula Mandel and Joan Myerson Shrager, the program has launched dozens of students on unprecedented explorations of themselves, their artistic creativity, and their ability to brighten places around the city, country – and the world – where their arrestingly beautiful pieces have been installed over the years.
