My sister passed away at the age of 32. She left behind 3 daughters. They are 11, 6, and 2 months old. My sister did not live a clean life and had many demons. We still at this time do not know the cause of death. Regardless of the reason we now face making sure these children are placed into a home that has a solid foundation, and one that will provide love, guidance, and support.
We are currently in the process of working with the State of Florida to gain some type of guardianship of the girls. My husband and I along with our 10 year old daughter are in Georgia. So, there is lots of legal red tape that we must go through for this situation. At this time each case is being handled different due to each child’s own unique situation. With this being said we are being proactive with updating and baby proofing our home for it to be ready for inspection and in hopes we are granted guardianship. We certainly have the room. We just need some help in getting it ready as we had no idea this would be happening. How do you honestly prepare for something this life changing? It is certainly not something you anticipate. Basically, everyone is starting over. Our daughter is 10 and with my medical condition the idea of becoming pregnant again has long since been accepted as not happening. All of our daughter’s baby items and clothes she has outgrown over the years are gone. This is a fresh slate for us. The girls will need new clothing as they have been bounced all over the place I’m just not sure what they may have when they arrive. The baby will also need items. We have some items now through my husband’s amazing friends and mine, but there is still more we will need. The money donated will go towards renovating our spare room into their room, clothing, school uniforms, school supplies, formula, diapers, and I’m sure many other things that I cannot think of at this moment. Donations will also go towards any legal fees we will encounter. We will be able to adopt the oldest child as she is considered an orphan, so we know there will be fees associated with the adoption. The other two children’s fathers are present, so those cases will be very different, and they may require us having to obtain an attorney. We are traveling back and forth to Florida for court hearings, so the donations will also be used for traveling expenses. We really aren’t sure how long the process will take. So, any help will certainly go a long way and will be appreciated. We have been so blessed thus far with family and friends helping. This has truly restored my faith.
I never thought I’d lose my baby sister. We knew she had her problems, but I guess we were oblivious to believe we would actually lose her. You know how you hear people say on TV about how they think it’ll never happen to them? Yeah, that was us! Now look at what we are facing. I am heartbroken because I could not save her. I have never felt this kind of pain. She was the baby of the family. We were supposed to protect her. Sadly, nobody could! I know she loved her children, but her demons were just too strong. I wish she knew how many people loved her. Right now I have to make sure her babies are taken care of and I cannot picture them in foster care any longer than necessary. I can never say thank you enough for all the help and prayers during this situation. I encourage anyone who has a family member or friend struggling with life to not give up on them. Tell them you love them every day. I took that for granted, and now I don’t have the chance to tell my baby sister how much I love her.
