WHAT IS IT?

The Longest Month is the working title of a documentary intended to highlight the efforts of Attack Helicopters assigned to the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade during Operation Iraqi Freedom 06-08.  We intend to highlight actions that took place between 28 JAN 07 and 28 FEB 07.  The events we will cover are not exclusively limited to that timeframe, but we are using that moment in time to illustrate the intensity of operations during that deployment.

Here’s an example of one of the stories that we would like to tell:

The President of the United States

Takes pride in presenting The Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to:

  Keith Yoakum

Chief Warrant Officer Four, U.S. Army

For extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, Multi-National   Corps-Iraq. Chief Warrant Officer Four Yoakum distinguished himself as a Pilot of an AH-64D Longbow Apache Helicopter on 2 February 2007     while   engaged in aerial operations in Baghdad, Iraq, during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.

During a reconnaissance mission, Chief Warrant Officer Four Yoakum’s aircraft was seriously damaged by heavy enemy machine gun fire, which       required him to land immediately. Without regard for his own safety and to protect his comrades, Chief Warrant Officer Four Yoakum chose to   remain with his wingman to destroy the enemy. With his main gun inoperable, his only option was to climb in altitude and then dive while firing his   Apache’s rockets. Ultimately the aircraft succumbed to its battle damage and crashed.

Chief Warrant Officer Four Yoakum’s distinctive accomplishments and dedication to service to his country are in keeping with the finest traditions     of   the military service, reflecting great credit upon himself, the 1st Cavalry Division, the Multi-National Corps-Iraq, and the United States Army.

But this is only part of the story.  We want your help to be able to tell it all.

WHAT DO WE NEED?

We need funding to cover travel, lodging, legal fees, equipment rental and things like licensing fees for the music we’d like to use.  Obviously, the more money that is donated the better we can make this film, and in the end that’s all we want, to make the best presentation that represents the blood, sweat and tears that were put forth by these soldiers.  $10,000 is the announced goal but if we raise more money, we can obviously do more things.

Filming is scheduled to begin at FT Hood, TX in the spring of 2019.

WHAT DO YOU GET?

In addition to our eternal gratitude, and knowledge that you are helping bring stories of heroes, courage under fire, and sacrifice that should be made public, we have come up with several items that will be available, depending on the level of contribution.

I want to share a quick update with everyone. Our filming at FT Hood is now complete. I'd like to give a big thanks to the 1st Cavalry Division Association for letting us use their facilities for the filming of interviews. If you were a member of The First Team please join!

We'd also like to thank 1-227th AVN, FIRST ATTACK for providing us aircraft and people to film and for the excellent job flying for our cameras. MAJ Oliver and SGT Capers of the 1 ACB PAO for putting up with us, and the ARMY PAO shop out in LA for getting us the paperwork we needed to get this done. Finally, thanks to all the folks I served with who used their time and money to come to "The Hood", sit down, relive some events and endure our questioning...We can only hope that we do right by all of you and produce something that will honor you and those we left behind. Now the hard work of editing all of this stuff together begins. We promise updates as work continues. Thanks again, ATTACK!

In the next few days we will remember the twelfth anniversary of what were some very tough times. This project aims to tell this story in an honest and respectful manner that honors everyone who served during that time.

For those who have never seen any of Kenn Christenson's past work. I am including a link to the film he made for 1-227th AVN called: First Attack. Thank you again for your support and assistance in getting our story told!
