Help us bring our Art Project "The Listener" to Burning Man 2019!

We're bringing "The Listener,"  an interactive art piece to Burning Man 2019. It has been assigned placement by the Burning Man arts group on the open playa.

The Listener is partially based on the 1980s favorite “Simon" where people work together to repeat sound and light sequences using buttons on pedestals.

The installation includes original and sampled sounds and custom lighting design sequences.

What we Need

"The Listener" project is funded solely by our team and our community--and we need your help! We've built much of the project and are in final design work for the music and lighting sequences. We still need help paying for the Hardware, Electronics, Carpentry and Transportation of the installation.

- Donate $10 and you we will include you in our thank you chant after the art is set up
We will make up a chant that somehow includes your name after the art is set up on playa.

- Donate $25 and you will receive a personalized postcard from the artists
We will send you a personal thank you post card in the mail. Snaily mail style.

 - Donate $50 and you will receive a printed photograph of the art
We'll take a great photo of the art on-playa, make a nice print with the event information on it and send it to you with a thank you after the event.

- Donate $200 and you will receive  an embroidered t-shirt AND photograph
We'll send you a an embroidered t-shirt to you after the event along with the photo from the $50 tier.

- Donate $300 and you may request specific audio samples to be included in the art.*
We'll work with you to get a specific sound or audio sequence of your choosing into the art and available through a specific sequence of button presses.

Use of Funds
All work is done by volunteers and we used our own tools equipment, and space whenever possible.

Fund expenditures have been made by category:

 - Electronics (50%)
 - Audio Equipment and Power (22%)
 - Hardware, Materials and Carpentry (14%)
 - Transportation (11%)
 - Incidental Expenses (3%)

The Artists
Nick, Rob (spacetime), Anne, Chad (miller), and Julie.

The Listener will be powered by a generator cabled to the center of the art using ~35 feet cables buried in trenches under the playa.

You need to secure generators on the open playa at Burning Man, both to deter theft and offer it some limited protection from the elements.

We had planned to build something called a generator "doghouse" from scratch and even spoke with the artist behind the famous metal letters seen annually for tips.

Then, the morning Chad was going to get started building our box, he drove past an abandoned rabbit hut on the side of the road just north of Burnside in east Portland.

He pulled over and texted me photos, to which I replied "That is perfect." He came and got me and we strapped the hutch on top of his car and drove it over to my place with the hazards flashing all the way.

And thus our generator doghouse became a bunny hut, requiring only venting and a few other details but also saving us many hours of design and build work. (Something we sorely needed so late in the game)

This photo is of Chad aka miller putting a series of metal grates on which allow the generator to breath and be less likely to overheat in the otherwise VERY HOT conditions we'll be facing in the next two weeks.

Hey Supporters! We are halfway to our fundraising goal. Please share our project with a friend and ak if they'll help support our build!

Today's video is a timelapse video of embedding electrical systems inside our art project. AC power in "the basement," power supply on first floor. Main mothership LAN / Teensy / Arduino on second floor, LED receiver in "the penthouse" or top floor used for controlling lights under the dome.

Hey supporters!

Here's a little hump-day action with a new time lapse showing cable routing of the speaker system and some of the LED work on the top of the center area. Features some good cat stuff as well.

Please don't forget to tell your friends about this art project and ask them to make a donation, no matter how small. Sharing the donation page on your social networks helps, but even better is direct outreach asking people you know.
