Iris Black, 25, daughter of Debbi and Andy Black of Maplewood NJ, sister of Nina Mehta, Granddaughter of Millie Safar, and partner of AnnaLisa Kirkland, passed away unexpectedly this past weekend. The entire extended family is heartbroken for their loss.
Iris, who came out as trans a few years ago, was in good spirits and planning on going back to school in January. She was currently living in Olympia Washington. She suddenly became very ill this weekend, with symptoms of fever and seizures. Her housemate and friend Madeline rushed Iris to the local ER but after only two hours and one CT scan, she was discharged and told to go home. About four hours later, Iris was deceased.
This GoFundMe has been created to help Debbi and Andy in this time of great need. The funds will be used to cover funeral expenses, pay for an independent autopsy, and to hire an attorney as they pursue legal action against the hospital. At the very least the hospital failed to do a thorough evaluation of Iris’ condition, at worst, Iris and her roommate may have been the victims of dismissive discrimination.
