In 1974, Twentieth Century Fox released the film Conrack starring Jon Voight. This film follows the arrival of a white teacher onto a South Carolina Sea Island.  In 1991, Daughters of the Dust, an epic tale of the Peazant family’s migration from the Sea Islands to the mainland, was released by Julie Dash. In 2017, John Legend Introduced a Gullah narrative in the breakout hit television series Underground.

It shouldn’t take another twenty years for another Gullah Narrative to become a mainstream treasure.

The mission of The International Gullah Film Festival (TIGFF) is a two- day event of International short, feature and documentary films, youth, programs and interactive panel discussions to encourage filmmakers to explore and tell visual stories based on the rich history of Gullah culture. With a spirit of national and international inclusion, TIGFF also strives to spotlight talented filmmakers and storytellers from around the world. This film festival is as much about pride for people of Gullah descent as it is about our place in the global community.

The multi-layered beneficial impacts of TIGFF include adding new jobs to the community, encouraging the use of facilities, increase local cultural tourism, influence local film projects and desired film locations, and introduce filmmaking education and experience to youth and young adults.

Although TIGFF is a two-day event, the efforts involved in its continued success and impact are ongoing and year-round. TIGFF has the potential to become a global advocate and ambassador for the Gullah Geechee Corridor as a whole and Georgetown County specifically to filmmakers and industry professionals at every level.

The community outreach from TIGFF will include workshops and summer programs that introduce youth and young adults to the process of filmmaking. These workshops and programs will identify talent that has the potential to thrive in the film industry whether as a writer or director, on the screen or behind the scenes. Participants will not only be able to strengthen their talents, they will also be given access to resources that will help them move onto the right track for creative and professional success. These programs will bring in industry people.  TIGFF will become a bridge between what the community needs and what the industry has to give.

To shine a light on what Georgetown County will be able to offer to filmmakers, whether national, international, regional or local is an opportunity to have their hard work acknowledged and recognized. The bigger this film festival becomes the more publicity and exposure our selected filmmakers will gain. Of course, it is our hope that among future selections will be the youth and young adults of Georgetown County in which TIGFF has invested time and resources.
