The Hearth at Aurora

After five years of working on both Aurora Studio & Gallery and working full time, I have some VERY EXCITING NEWS! I have have decided to merge my two loves in order to create my retirement job!

If you are interested in learning more, read on.

I am buying a vacation rental in Asheville! Why? Because Asheville hosts a number of visitors each year (over 9 million in 2014) and I love hosting people!

Additionally, Aurora Studio has bounced from place to place, not having a home of its own. My garage and weaving room have become a storage space for many (MANY) of the art supplies for Aurora Studio. So, this house will also provide a real space and home for Aurora Studio as well.

What is Aurora Studio & Gallery?

Aurora Studio & Gallery was conceived when I (Lori Greenberg), was inspired by a woman who was struggling with multiple life stressors due to homelessness. I observed her artistic strengths and began research for an art center in Asheville for those who need support due to traumatic life experiences. There weren’t any.

In the spring of 2012 I approached Arts2People and a partnership was formed. A year later, in the summer of 2013, a colleague urged me to begin hosting workshops. Those workshops have been running ever since. To date Aurora Studio & Gallery has provided a supportive art studio to over 40 people who have been affected by mental health needs, addiction or homelessness.

Aurora Studio & Gallery provides artists with the space and art supplies to explore their personal creativity, which they could not obtain nor otherwise afford. Weekly workshops are facilitated in Asheville. The program is volunteer run and works in collaboration with local artists, healing arts instructors and volunteers. I too am a volunteer.

While I have sought funding through fundraising, grants and donations, it has been a challenge to expand programming while working full time. The intention of purchasing this home is as a means to support growth for Aurora Studio.

I am excited about this new prospect and confident that we will move on to supporting more artists in our new home. And the house, which I am calling the Hearth (for Aurora) will not only offer guests a comfortable place to stay, minutes from downtown, but it will help support a very special arts program.

For those of you who know me, you know I have never had a bulging wallet. However, I have been able to make things happen in slow but steady ways. Thanks to thrift stores and Craigslist, I have much of the furniture needed for the move. There are still a few more items that I could use help with as after I make the downpayment for this home, as the money will be tighter for a little while.

While Aurora Studio & Gallery  has a fiscal sponsor which is a 501(c)(3) which allows us to fundraise, I am the one buying the house and I could use your help. I am hoping to raise $5000 for the finishing touches on the house: sofas, a washer and dryer, patio furniture, a grille, etc.

We will accept any and all donations. However, for those able and interested in making a larger donation - you (or a designated friend or family member) can have a stay at the Hearth. The prices listed are specials for helping with this project.

$ 500 - for a weekend, Friday night until Monday morning.

$1000 - for a week (seven over nights).

We are hoping to be ready by the fall for bookings. For those making donations with a visit in mind, please write me a note in the message box, so I can contact you with dates once we are ready to go.

For all others, you will be invited to the opening and THANK YOU!

It is the inspiration from many brilliant artists who create art during difficult times that Aurora Studio & Gallery was born and is dedicated.
