The Next Big Step For The Active Amputee

About me
I’m Bjoern. I am the father of three amazing children, the husband of an equally amazing wife, a thankful cancer survivor, an outdoor enthusiast, a passionate development practitioner and a very active above-the-knee amputee.

From my own experience I know that being active is an essential ingredient for a full recovery after limb loss. The problem is that often amputees are on their own once they have left the hospital, with no one around to encourage them to try out new things, provide the information that is necessary to make the first move and push the boundaries.

About The Active Amputee
So in early 2017 I set up The Active Amputee , a resource page from amputees for amputees. When I started my page I had one thing in mind: Enable amputees to live an active and fulfilling life. I wanted to inform them, to inspire them and to engage them in new and exciting activities. Nothing more and nothing less. It was as simple as that.

Since April 2017 I have published close to 150 articles on a variety of amputation-related topics. Anything from sharing inspirational stories from all around the world to dealing with stump pain, from getting the right prosthetic socket to starting paraclimbing, from finding funding for your adaptive sports equipment to presenting the newest developments in the prosthetic sector – just to name a few.

So far thousands of visitors from 140 countries have read the posts on The Active Amputee . Hundreds of people have asked me for advice. Dozens have shared their stories to encourage and support their fellow amputees. The feedback from people with disabilities as well as from healthcare professionals is amazing and immensely rewarding.

The next step for The Active Amputee
Now that the blog is well established, it’s time to grow and reach out to even more people. During a recent survey, readers of The Active Amputee  have asked for additional video and audio content.

Small video clips providing life hacks for amputees, explaining step-by-step how to start something new and showcasing some of the amazing amputees that have a story to tell. And a new infotainment podcast series with in-depth reporting on new developments in the prosthetic sector and amazing interviews featuring some of the most inspiring amputees from all around the globe.

To produce high quality videos and a start a new podcast series I need your help.

Your donation will allow me to...
...produce 12 episodes of The Active Amputee Podcast (one episode per month between April 2019 and March 2020). This includes the background research, the travel costs for the recording, the editing, mixing and hosting as well as promoting the new show on various platforms.

...produce 12 video tutorials for The Active Amputee YouTube Channel (one video per month between March 2019 and February 2020). This includes the background research, travel costs for the filming, the filming and editing of the material as well as promoting the videos on various platforms.

...buy software and replace IT and recording equipment if necessary.

Special fundraising event: The 888 metre climb at Green Spider in Hereford/UK
Part of my efforts to raise awareness on disability issues, showcase the amazing things amputees can do and raise money to further grow The Active Amputee  is a sponsored climb.

On Saturday, January 12, 2019 I will attempt to climb 888 metres in a single day. The event will take place at Green Spider in Hereford. The training is already in full progress.

Come and join us on that special day. Climb with me, help belaying, cheer me up when the going gets tough or just pop by for a cup of coffee, a cake and a chat with other climbers and supporters of The Active Amputee . I would love to see you then.

So mark the day and join us! Saturday, January 12, 2019 from 10.00 am onwards. At Green Spider Climbing in Hereford .
