Help Bob Battle Cancer

Donation protected

This campaign is now closed - I am at a point in the timeline when it just doesn't make sense to continue. Thanks to all who donated; your support has made a difficult time easier. Thanks to the organizers of this campaign: you know that I'm so indebted to you for all your actions that I'll never be able to fully repay what I owe. You are the best.

----Bob

PS. If you have your heart set on donating a couple million bucks to help me realize my final wishes, call me. We can work it out.

Bob has a rare blood cancer called Primary Myelofibrosis, and his doctors are pessimistic about his chances of surivival through 2016.

This cancer, which causes the bone marrow to stop producing healthy blood cells, is diagnosed in only 2 of every 100,000 people.  It causes severe damage to the body along the way; currently, Bob is at the risk of bleeding out and dying from varices in the gut.

Bob getting a transfusion. He's had 30 in the past year, and in April, had to have 12 on an emergency basis when he bled out.

The only treatment available which even stands a chance at driving the cancer into remission is a stem cell transplant. Unfortunately, the way this disease has progressed for Bob, he doesn't qualify for this treatment.

Bob was participating in a clinical trial for a new drug to help alleviate some symptoms; however, on Feb 9, Bob received a phone call that the trial had been halted due to mortality: many patients bled out and died. In April, Bob bled out, and was placed in a coma while the surgical team spent 4 days trying to stop the bleeding. This experience forced Bob to stop work.

You can help by donating to this fund we started to defray medical and living expenses. Currently, Bob’s spleen has grown to 2 times normal; he requires frequent blood transfusions to battle his severe anemia; pain medication for the bone pain; and he suffers from a compromised immune system, and has to limit contact with the rest of the world.

Michal:  I met Bob in 2014 at a powerlifting seminar in Brooklyn, New York. Bob shared his story of taking up strongman and powerlifting after his diagnoses of Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH). Bob has since become a true friend and mentor who has shown me what real strength is.

In addition to living with DISH, Bob was diagnosed with myelofibrosis (a blood cancer) in the summer of 2015, and is facing the fight of his life.  Please donate to help fund medical procedures and the medication not covered by his insurance.

Kerrie: I first met Bob online during a difficult time for me.  I had to make a tough decision on putting to sleep one of the dogs here due to severe behavioural issues. At that time, I only 'knew' Bob through his posts on a small Malamute forum. However, he messaged me offering support and kindness, which led on to one of my most valued friendships.

Bob:  This cancer struck me out of the blue; I nearly died on July 21, 2015 while in the ICU receiving 8 units of blood.  Everything suddenly became surreal when an oncologist walked into my room, introduced himself, and explained that in his opinion, I had a very rare blood cancer, and that he would be running tests to confirm that diagnosis.

If you cannot do anything else, please take a few minutes to register for a DNA screen at http://www.bethematch.org .  If you are notified that you are a match, you will be able to save somebody's life.  How cool is that?

I’m documenting my journey, no matter where it leads, at http://www.terminalreason.com .
