Homeward Bound is a groundbreaking leadership, strategic and science initiative for women, set against the backdrop of Antarctica.
The initiative, turned global movement, aims to heighten the influence and impact of women with a science background in order to influence policy and decision making as it shapes our planet.
Homeward Bound engages women leaders in Science, Technology. Engineering and Maths (STEM) for the future of our planet.
The lack of women in science and in academic positions is a global issue (currently women hold 28% of academic positions). This expedition address this by building future global leaders to inspire the next generation and for the future of our planet “mother nature needs her daughters”.
I have been selected as one of 70 women scientists (encompassing all career stages) from around the world to take part in Homeward Bound 2018.
Why Sponsor Me?
There are several great articles about the challenges women in science and academia (higher education) face:
https://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/women-stem-more-likely-burn-out
https://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2015/jun/13/how-well-are-women-represented-in-uk-science

Participating in this program will enable me to not only aquire key skills to overcome these obstacles, it will allow me to pass these skills on to future generations of women in STEM.
Logistics
The leadership program runs for a year (and beyond) and culminates in three weeks in Antarctica (February/March 2018).
The total costs for the Antrarctic trip is approx. $40,000 per preson, the trip costs me $16,000 USD in total. I plan to appy for travel fellowships. This platform will hopefully enable me to crowdsource and gain sponsorship to partially fund these costs.
Personally
Here is my 2 minute application video:

I am a Chancellor's Fellow and Lecturer in Drug Discovery at the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Science, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland. UK. I have just started my own research group (2016).
Going to Antarctica is a life goal, I believe the trip will benefit all aspects of my life and career.
It may even be life changing!
This opportunity allows me to develop as a future leader and as a women in STEM.
Videos and photos of penguins, icebergs and expedition life will be shared to all that sponsor me - I promise they'll be fun.
Thank you for your support,
Kate
