Calder's Double Amputee Athlete Journey

Hi!  My name is Calder Hodge.  I am 15 years old, and I was born with no tibia bones in my legs.  At 2 ½ years old, my family made the decision to have my legs amputated above the knee.  I have had prosthetics since that time.  With being an above knee amputee, it means that my prosthetics have to have knees in them for me to have flexibility or bending.  I have 2 types of prosthetics…my walking knee/feet and my sports running blades.  I use the walking legs for everyday activities, but my running blades are for my sports activities (mostly football).  I am constantly growing and needing to update my prosthetics. This is where you could help.    I am hoping to continue to be able to update my walking and running legs as I grow and change. I also hope to continue growing as an athlete and becoming a better football player. These knees / legs cost my parents a lot of money after insurance, and as much as they would like to buy them for me and continue to update them when I need to, they just cannot do it.  I need new legs about every 1-3 years and new sockets every year as my leg grows and changes. Also, insurance only covers 1 set of legs each time, so the 2nd set is completely on my family to pay for. I am looking for help to purchase my prosthetics, but also I would like to learn how to use them effectively through therapy and camps allowing me to continue working hard to achieve my goals like playing football for Texas A&M and becoming the first double amputee quarterback in the NFL! I want to be able to live my life to the fullest possibilities and continue to develop at the pace of kids and athletes my own age.  I want to be able to walk from concrete to grass or gravel and not have to worry about falling because it is hard for me to adjust my gait.  I want to conquer hills and curbs with ease, but I also want to learn to use me blades to help me in developing as a quarterback. Being able to update my prosthetics will allow me to be the best that I can be and compete against other able body athletes on their level. It is rare for a kid my age to have prosthetics of the caliber that I use, but I have worked hard to be as advanced as I currently am able to be.  The only way I can continue to crush my goals as a young man is to increase my ability to walk, run and compete.  I hope you can find it in your heart to help me in achieving my goals.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Calder Hodge
