Our dear friend Molly needs our help.

As many of you know, Molly moved back home earlier this year for what she thought would be a few quick months of taking care of her ulcerative colitis before resuming her job search.

Instead, on August 28th, she was admitted to the hospital for emergency surgery. The doctor removed all of her large intestine, gave her an ileostomy, and (here's the real kick in the head) found cancer of the appendix that had spread and seeded itself throughout her abdominal cavity.

Molly is currently undergoing chemotherapy, and may be for some time, as there is no known cure for this type of cancer. Cancers of the appendix are so rare that only around 1,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with them each year. The only reason you've probably ever heard of it is it's the kind of cancer that killed Audrey Hepburn.

Molly has health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, which she believes has literally saved her life by allowing her to move back to Texas and get access to care that wasn’t available to her in West Virginia. Without this insurance, she likely would not have been diagnosed in time.

However, she just learned that her insurer is eliminating the plan that she uses in 2016. Her current plan had a $1,500 cap on out-of-pocket expenses per year. The new plan has a cap of $6,000 out-of-pocket, which will be exhausted by chemo expenses in the first month of the calendar year.

Molly budgeted for a period of unemployment and medical expenses, but those savings are simply not enough to cover her anticipated expenses through an indefinite period of unemployment. She is applying for Social Security Disability, but it’s unlikely that the application process will be complete by the time the first bills come due.

Many people have asked how they can help – and here’s a way we can help! The goal of this campaign is to raise $7,000 – enough to cover Molly’s out-of-pocket medical expenses and the small percentage that GoFundMe deducts from fundraising campaigns.

If there is anything that you're willing to contribute, or if you could share this with friends and colleagues (including those who may not know about her diagnosis), it would make a world of difference to Molly and her parents. It's hard enough fighting a disease that has a very slim five year survival rate – having to do so while also trying to figure out how to pay for care is crippling.

If everyone pitches in, even a small amount, we will be able to help Molly get through this with all the resources she needs. Please give what you can! She has a long, tough road ahead, and needs all the love we can send her way.
