Building for a Bright Future (B4BF)
Imagine...a preschool where typical enrollment ranges from 40 to 100 children with only one unprepared teacher. Imagine that there are no books, no learning materials...children are bored & fail to develop their growing brains. Imagine a teacher with a stick & students fearful of being hit by that stick for something so simple as asking a question.
In Rwanda, thousands of children never attend school or drop out of school at a very early age. Teacher education programs leave so much to be desired, and few, if any, teachers have ever seen a high-quality preschool/school in action.
Enter - Bright School & TEACH Rwanda!
Bright School began in Muhanga, Rwanda, when Louise Batamuriza, a Rwandan teacher, set up a preschool class in a rented house with just one box of 24 crayons. Louise called Jan Brown, an early childhood educator Louise had worked with in the US, to “Come help!” With that, TEACH Rwanda was born in early 2012.
TEACH Rwanda is determined that every child in Rwanda have the opportunity to get a good education—especially necessary when young brains are growing! Our schools serve nutritious snacks, so children’s brains can develop & learn. We also supplement school fees, so children living in low-income families can attend school during the most important years of development.
TEACH Rwanda is transforming early childhood teacher education in Rwanda. We prepare Rwandan teachers to offer young children engaging, meaningful learning experiences.
· provides pre-service and in-service professional development and resources,
· equips our Exemplary and Project Schools with creative, Rwanda-centric learning materials and furnishings,
· insists on just 20 children per classroom with two
well-prepared teachers who implement modern teaching strategies, and
· builds Rwandan early childhood leadership capacity.
WHY are we passionate about early childhood education?
Early childhood education is the foundation for life-long learning. High-quality, hands-on early experiences are essential for children’s early brain development.
TEACH Rwanda now operates four bustling preschool classes as well as Primary 1, 2 & 3 (first, second & third grades) at Bright School. Children from all walks of life attend, from the wealthy to the most vulnerable. Children read books, write original stories in their journals, solve math problems when they build with blocks, and discover scientific principles when they play in sand and water. Education officials and organizations around the world are amazed to see children at Bright write stories at an age when most children in Rwanda are still learning to spell their names.
Please donate today! We have so many exciting things happening right now. We're preparing to add a P4 classroom and hopefully a P5 classroom soon thereafter. We are growing as the children are growing, and we need your help to keep things going.
We appreciate every single donation! Thank you for taking the time to get to know about TEACH Rwanda, the Bright School and our passion for providing a better future for the children of Rwanda.
