Teach Kids to Code and Blink LEDs

Donation protected
CS4RI (Computer Science for Rhode Island) is one of the most ambitious statewide computer science initiatives in the US. For a second year, CS4RI is bringing over 1,000 students and tech sector employees (that's where I come in) together for a day of education and inspiration at the CS4RI Summit.

On December 13, 2017, I will be teaching four groups of 20 public school students how to code. It's my belief that physical, real-world outcomes produces a more inclusive and engaging programming experience. To accomplish this, I'm going to be teaching kids to code using the Chibi Chip from Chibitronics:

Over the past few years, I have put on two or more (free) workshops per year to teach kids both programming with physical outcomes and also design+manufacturing through CAD and 3D printing. This is how I give back to the community.

CS4RI has arranged for enough Chromebooks so that each student can use a computer that day. I have ordered 25 Chibi Chip + Clip bundles, some Circuit Sticker LEDs, and some copper tape. Even with a substantial bulk purchase discount, my total cost is $652 (shipped), or about $30 per student per workshop. In addition, I'm dipping into my supplies of Circuit Sticker LEDs and copper tape.

Your support will help me teach kids at this summit and at future events, because I'll be able to reuse the materials many times (as much as I would like to send students home with their own Chibi Chip/Clip, I'd have to ask for a lot more to make that happen). I'm thankful for any help you can give. It will help fuel my efforts and enthusiasm to share what I know with the next generation of computer scientists!
