GM Monie Velez Medical - Oct 2017

$11,215 of $15,000 goal

Raised by 143 people in 38 months
This is an appeal to the friends, students and everyone who has been touched by the Filipino Martial Art of Balintawak in general and Grand Master Monie Velez in particular.

GM Monie was hospitalized on January 8th for breathing difficulties.  He had a low red blood count and required three packs of blood transfusion.  It was also determined that he will need ongoing dialysis.

I am coordinating the raising of funds for his hospital bills ($3,000) and continuing dialysis and other medical costs.  GM Monie has no medical or health insurance.  It would be a great help if in addition to a one time gift, that we can receive a regular monthly commitment for the monthly medical expenses.   Any amount will do, for example, five or ten dollars a month would go a long way if many sign-up.  Please inform me of the amount being pledged so that we can plan accordingly.

Please give as you are able.  Thank you for your generosity.

Jemar Carcellar, Full Qualified Instructor under GM Bobby Taboada – Taboada Balintawak and a student and friend of GM Monie Velez and the WOTBAG family.

Update 10/26/2017

I spoke with GM Monie for about an hour last night (Thursday morning in the Philippines). He was in high spirits and was again looking forward to a future.

His heart rate was low (mid 50’s) and the doctor wanted it to be higher before they can release him

Fast forward to early morning today. I received a FB messenger call. He is going to be released tomorrow Philippine time (tonight our time) !!! I was so relieved. He will continue his rest and recovery at his home. He will also have cardio rehab for his heart in the coming weeks.

Thank you for such an amazing show of kindness, generosity and solidarity. Altogether, we have raised more than $3,700 from 41 donors using gofundme and private delivery methods. (Gofundme imposes a total of 8.5% in fees. So out of a total amount of $3,465 in Gofundme donations, net proceeds are $2,628.75).

We have raised enough to pay for every hospital, laboratory and medicine bill and a little bit extra to take care of his ongoing medical needs for at least a week.

Let’s pause and rejoice. We did it !!! Together we saved a precious life and gave his family more time to enjoy him.

There are still medical and financial hurdles that he will need our continuing support.

On an ongoing basis he will need dialysis four times a week, maintenance medicine and regular lab work. Plus the cardio rehab which is yet to be determined. Estimated monthly maintenance expenses is $1,325.

If it is in your heart to continue giving, it will be greatly appreciated. This is not a daunting amount if everyone chips on regularly. I will continue to keep this gofundme campaign open for any future donations.

Again, thank you so much and may the Lord richly bless you!

GM Monie Velez was rushed to the hospital in the early morning hours of Oct 20. He was advised to go to ICU but opted not to due cost and lack of funds. He has undergone dialysis and other tests. So far expenses have been about 1,100 USD. Estimated daily expenses are about $200 per day while in patient.

He had a heart attack on Oct 21 while in the hospital. He is recovering but still weak. He is scheduled to have an echo cardiogram on Oct 23.

There has been a good response to pleas for donations. Thank you for your generosity and willingness to give at such a short notice.

Unfortunately we are still running short. In the Philippines, the hospital bills need to be paid as they are incurred. Medicines need to be bought separately by the family. So, if there is no money, the patient will not be given medicine by the hospital

Please help if you can. Any amount helps.

First of all, a big thank you to everyone who gave, shared with friends and offered encouraging words. For which, Monie and his family are extremely grateful.

Since the first post, Monie was released from the hospital and has since been hospitalized two more times. He was expected to be released from the hospital today - February 15. His second hospitalization was for a surgery to prepare his arm for dialysis. The third one was due to another bout of breathing difficulty while undergoing dialysis.

I spoke to him last Saturday, Feb 13 and Monie seems to be in good spirits and can't wait go home.

To date , we sent him $3,950. This covered the two hospitalization bills plus an estimated amount to cover the latest hospital stay. In the Philippines, the hospital will not release a person until the entire bill is paid, while the hospital bill accumulates in the meantime.

To date GoFundMe donations is 2,105 less GoFundMe fees of 174.67 less Western Union transmission fees of $74 gives us a net amount of $1,856. 33. Hence an immediate shortfall of $2,093.67. It was through money advances by some generous friends that this amount was covered. These folks were gracious enough to allow us to to pay the amount over time, whenever funds are available.

In the meantime, Monie's monthly medical needs are around $900 (PHP 40,000 assuming an exchange rate of PHP 45 to $1) broken down as follows:

$400 - Medication (Kidneys, Diabetes, Heart)
$500 - Dialysis - 3x a week

In order to cover this, I would like to encourage a micro giving commitment. If everyone who shared this through Facebook (more than 300) will just give $5 per month, then we will have more than enough. Of course some may not be able to give and that's all right. Your prayers and support are extremely important. On the other hand, some may be able to give more. Just make sure that you visit GoFundMe every month and donate before the first of each month as I need to send the money every fifth of each month.

In order for me to know whether we are on track for our monthly needs, please share your commitment in this gofundme forum or if you would like to make it confidential, please private message me through Facebook.

For those who would like to give from time to time without having to commit monthly, your gifts are welcome as well.

Together we can do this.
