We Need Help Getting A Car!

Greetings to all my personal as well as trans*community friends, allies/supporters!
Happy New Year and Great Future Destiny for you all!

I’ve come to GoFundMe to put out a call for assistance, and I hope you will read the following and find it in your hearts to answer the call:

I’d like to introduce myself to all of you who don’t know me yet. My name is Cheryl Courtney-Evans. I’m a 63 year old trans*woman, Founder and Executive Director of T.I.L.T.T., Inc. (Transgender Individuals Living Their Truth, Inc.); T.I.L.T.T., Inc. was founded in 2007 [September 27]. We are a transgender support and advocacy organization established in Atlanta, GA., to serve the transgender community of the Greater Atlanta area. We serve the trans*feminine as well as the trans*masculine communities, as we feel that we all have some common issues, and share information between us. You may learn more about us (and our mission) at www.tiltt.org, our web site.

Over the years, in our attempt to address trans*issues in a holistic manner, some of us (usually yours truly, with assist from one or two members when they can find time) have done outreach to our trans street population, most usually our survival sex work women [and girls who have been rejected by ‘blood’ family], dispensing condoms and HIV/AIDS prevention [and treatment] information, as well as ‘recruitment’ information about T.I.L.T.T., Inc. (hoping they will come out and join us). In that period of time, we have survived, moving to meet at two or three different locations, before we found a home at the Phillip Rush Community Center about 7 years ago, through their good graces. I personally keep our name and incorporation good through expenditures yearly from my own fixed income to keep us a registered corporation.

The problem over the years has been that on a personal level, I’ve had to move also, dependent (due to my fixed income) on obtaining affordable housing. This generally disrupted my outreach to my constituents, as I now lived an impossibly inconvenient distance from the epicenter of the nighttime transgender community and activity.

As we believe in serving the trans*community in a holistic manner, addressing a number of issues we face as a community, I have been greatly concerned with our street (and many times homeless) trans community, with the increase of inclement weather. We actually lost one of the girls we were ministering to due to pneumonia, and it drove the point home to me all the more, that these women need things like coats, sweaters and other pieces of clothing. I have been offering them these items when they come to our meetings, but as I have no way to transport them, can only ask that they drop by my house. This has not proven to be altogether a logical solution, so I’ve been casting about as to where I can obtain transportation so I can “take the help to them”. I have, on a number of occasions, had promises from people with cars/vans to take me, only to have the plan(s) fall through. Besides clothing, I hope to continue my condom distribution, as well as take someone to do HIV testing.

On a personal note, after my recent operation for lung cancer and my prolonged recovery from chemo/radiation, I’ve had need of (and difficulty with finding, at times) transportation to doctors’ appointments, grocery trips for my household, etc. With regard to occasions that regard a combination of T.I.L.T.T., Inc. and my ability [or inability], I continually get requests to speak and share my trans*experience(s) [now that I am recovered to some extent] for various events and panel discussions, that I find myself unable to make due to lack of transportation. So this transport would be a real boon to myself, T.I.L.T.T., Inc. and relief to any and all persons I’ve had to call upon for assistance with transportation. (Thanks to all who have come through for me to this point.)

Now here’s to the “ask”; I have had a conversation with a good friend who’s told me that if I can put my hands on $1500, her daughter has a boyfriend who works for a company that operates an auto auction and he can assist us in getting good transportation. I’m adding $500 more to the request to cover insurance, tags, etc., so we’re talking about $2000.

I’m hoping we can find enough good hearted folks from our community to achieve this mission. I sincerely want to resume my ministering to my demographic, and we’ve not been able to garner enough donations into our treasury on a regular basis to have the funds available to accomplish this. My own living situation and health is not conducive to my using MARTA to achieve any sort of outreach; we really need transportation. Will you help us? I believe with this transportation we can make a real difference in the fortunes & future of more than a few of the Atlanta trans*community.

Thank you for your time and attention.
