TBI Survivor Artist Scholarship

$3,120 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 28 people in 14 months
Created June 25, 2018
Revive Studios is raising money to provide scholarships for Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor Artists in order to own their own virtual studio! Every $5,000 raised provides business ownership for one of these incredibly talented people. This business ownership will give a Brain Injury Survivor the opportunity for financial freedom, hope, dignity, a sense of purpose and the ability to bring joy in our lives by sharing their art. Revive Studios also gives back to the community by donating a portion of art sales back to our local brain injury foundations. The local non profit brain injury foundations provide the selection and award of the scholarships to the survivor artist.  We are not a non-profit, but work directly with them to award scholarships, provide resources and support forums, support groups for care givers and family of TBI survivors as well as open door to entrepreneurship for these amazing and talented people. Please help raise awareness, that together, with their talent and our kind hearts we can create business owners out of people who have lost hope or have no resource to show the world how talented they are. You can view our story at  https://revivestudioart.com/ryans-story/

Art Sales are NOW AVAILABLE  - please help us raise the next Scholarship for a deserving artist in need!

We are bringing on another artist! We need your help to Welcome Donovan to the Revive Studios Community. Please help us raise the Scholarship funds so Donovan can share his amazing digital art with the world!

On October 8th, 2013, Donovan suffered a traumatic brain injury, via a suicide attempt. He jumped three stories from a mall parking garage, and was hospitalized at Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego, for four months afterward: 36 days in the ICU (1 month in a medically induced coma), and the remainder of the time he stayed at a rehabilitation floor. Donovan owes his life to the dedicated staff there--for they saved his life quite literally on multiple occasions--and he plans to work there in some capacity, sometime in the future. Donovan has now just graduated from high school, and will attend UCSD in the fall. He is pictured on the far right of the cover photo of this page.

Please share and support anyway you can, we will work hard to give Donovan a business he can be proud of selling his amazing art!

This is a photo of Ryan (TBI Survivor and champion of Revive Studios) attending a showing of Kurt's art at the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation! With your help Kurt will soon to be a scholarship recipient!

As a bright, artistic, athletic, architect, Kurt would inspire the average man. But if you knew him and what he has been through and overcome you would be in awe! Kurt suffered a major stroke at 47 , at the time his children were only 11 & 17. His wife Kathy, a San Diego Schoolteacher was told he would remain in a vegetative state. Well they didn't know Kurt! This man refused a walker and dragged his legs through the rehab facility, holding the handrails until his legs made it under him. His strength and determination to be the man of his household and continue projects is nothing less than amazing. Even if it meant crawling to open a paint can and finish painting a room he started before his stroke - he finished it! Kurt not only became an outstanding artist, but taught himself how to paint left handed.

As if he did not have enough struggles regaining his own physical strength through his intense will to live, inconceivably, his wife Kathy died in her sleep of an epileptic seizure. She was loved by so many, this family was in shock and losing her brought great sadness to Kurt and his family.

But Kurt persevered! With two children to love, it gave him the courage he needed to get through yet another difficult time.

In addition to his right side paralysis, the damage to Kurts brain is where language resides, it prevents him from fully understanding what others say or write. While very determined and able, he still relies on family and friends for many tasks, mostly where language and communication is involved. Kurt expresses himself through a few words, sounds, and drawings in a process that look a lot like charades, And he paints.Everyday. Using his now-adept left hand, he now holds with confidence the brush and places bit after bit of color, creating more beauty and personal joy with every brushstroke.

There is no one more deserving of the Revive Studio Scholarship than Kurt! With your help, we WILL open a virtual studio for Kurt where he can share his art with the world! Your generosity will provide confidence, independence and a platform to sell Kurt's art that will not require verbal communication with customers. Thank you for your consideration! Corporate sponsors that would like to be recognized on Kurts website are welcome! Please inquire!
