Tameka Goes To Film School Fund

Tameka Mullins  BROOKLYN, NY

When I decided to go to college one of my main dilemmas was whether to major in journalism or film. I always thought I wanted to be an actress, but writing had a stronger hold on me. So after earning a journalism scholarship to Wayne State University, I immersed myself in the world of words and the art of broadcast journalism. Then New York City beckoned and I answered that call. After completing my education at Fordham University I was afforded the opportunity to work at WCBS Radio, several public relations firms, The Girl Scouts of the USA, Scholastic and many other amazing companies in between.

Then the recession hit. Workers all over had a hard time getting jobs and especially people who worked at nonprofits and public relations firms (ME) so I had to reinvent myself and use my skills to make my way in another business sector. I now have my own social media marketing business, but as any entrepreneur knows, being the boss can be challenging when you’re the only one charged with bringing in new business. As soon as you get great projects, you can lose them due to budget cuts and the realignment of your client’s goals.

That brings me here. My love for film has never died. I no longer envision myself on the big screen (much), but I know I want to write screenplays and quite possibly for television. I already write books but I know that having as many skillsets in your pocket can only work in your favor so I applied to the New York Film Academy. I was accepted! Great, right? Well, it is, but… The tuition is something that I don’t have lying around and the program starts on Jan 23, 2017! Running a fledgling business, paying New York rent and funding my own book publishing efforts hasn’t exactly left me flush. I need help in order to accept this wonderful opportunity of a year long screenwriting program.

I have never been great at asking for help, but I am getting better with it as life goes on and this is something I am very passionate about so I thought I would put myself out there. Also, several friends suggested it and said they would support me because they believe in my talent. I couldn’t let them down, now could I?

If you would help to invest in my education so I can gain the skills I need to create great scripts, I would be super appreciative. We need more diverse writers in Hollywood writer’s rooms! Help me get there, please!

Sincerely,
Tameka

Hello everyone! I just wanted to give a quick update on the campaign. I am 11% funded! Thanks so much to everyone who has donated and shared information about the fundraiser.

I can't believe we're in the middle of February already! That gives me seven more months to raise money so I can attend NY Film Academy!

I am thinking of other ideas and searching for as many grants and scholarships as I can as well. If you happen to know of any, please drop me a line!

Also, I recently was hired to provide social media marketing services for a filmmaker whose film SHINE will highlight salsa dancing, family relationships and gentrification in NYC neighborhoods. I am very excited to be working on this project. It gives me hope that I am well on my way to creating my own screenplays and films. Your donations are not in vain. I am a working artist!

Thanks again and please share with anyone who you think may want to help an emerging screenwriter!

PS:

Here is a recent Q&A about my self-publishing journey for my novella in Self-Publishing Review that serves as a receipt of sorts that I am out here making things happen. I truly appreciate all of the support and will continue to work hard! http://bit.ly/2lT2DUB

Have a beautiful day!

Hello everyone!

The original screenwriting program I was accepted to starts next Monday so I initially was feeling down, but, I shook those emotions off because I have nine months to save up the tuition I need to start in September.

I believe I can do it, but I know I can't do it alone. A few years ago I probably would have tried to because I have never been comfortable asking for help. Not anymore.

I am an artist who has invested in the creative community most of my life and now I need help. I am proud to be able to call on my fellow community for assistance!

So to those who have given already, I extend another thank you. I TRULY appreciate you. If you think anyone else would like to help an emerging writer achieve one of her biggest goals, please feel free to forward this campaign to them.

In closing, I thought you all would get a kick out of this. Below is a short exchange I was having on Facebook and even in a comical moment, someone was touched by my writing. If this isn't the universe telling me not to give up on working toward attending this screenwriting program, I don't know what is.

Read and enjoy.

Bless you all and have a wonderful week ahead!

Hello all!

I have recently updated my campaign to reflect the amount of financial aid and grants I have received.

This gets me much closer to my goal, but I still have a long way to go. I will be researching additional grant and aid opportunities and will also use the funds from the sale of my new novella, 12 Hours of Daylight to further my fundraising efforts.

I will keep you posted as I reach certain benchmarks.

Again, I'd like to thank everyone who has donated already. It's truly appreciated.

Cheers!
Have a wonderful rest of the week!

Hello and Happy New Year everyone!

First off, thanks so much to everyone who has contributed and shared the campaign so far. I truly appreciate your help and evangelism.

Along with your donations, I was able to secure some financial aid and a grant from NYFA, but it's not enough for me to attend the program on Jan 23rd. To that end, I will have to defer until the next term, which starts on Sept 25, 2017.

I will be working to secure additional funding from now until then so I can take advantage of this amazing program.

I still would like to keep this campaign open so others can donate as many have expressed their wish to assist me with this.

Please share this link with others who value artists and would like to help a writer achieve her dreams of completing a screenwriting program that would change the course of her life and career.

I appreciate you! Have a truly prosperous, happy and safe 2017!
