DiEM25 UK, the British wing of the internationalist grassroots “Democracy in Europe Movement 2025” and Take a Break from Brexit are scheduled to host a fringe meeting at the upcoming Labour Party conference, on September 22, 2019.
Take a Break from Brexit is a campaign seeking to delay and democratise the Brexit process. We oppose with all our energy an antidemocratic no deal. We think we need more time and a much better democratic process to understand what to make of Brexit. We would like to see Citizens Assemblies on Brexit in each region and nations of the United Kingdom.
The Brexit impasse in Parliament continues to be a political deadlock. Now, Boris Johnson is fully set on driving Britain off the no-deal cliff edge, straight into Trump’s arms, further dividing the British people in the process. All this delivered on a mandate that he claims to have the supreme power to interpret.
We have a plan, but we need your help.
This year’s Labour Party conference in Brighton (21-25 September) will be a vital moment in shaping the opposition to this authoritarian folly. Play the divide-and-rule game of the Brexiteers, or lead the country out of this mess and into a society built for the many, not the few. That is the choice facing Labour today, and we know what side we want to be on.
This is why we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to host this meeting and share our proposal for reshaping British democracy through Citizens’ Assemblies . These assemblies bring together ordinary people, chosen by sortition in order to accurately represent the population of the country. They are an essential part of deliberative democracy, and have been used from Canada and Ireland to Rojava as a way to reach informed, fair and sensible decisions in a democratic way.
We need your help to present our plan for a rolling series of Citizens Assemblies on Brexit at the Labour Conference in Brighton, on the 22nd of September. We know how important this moment is for the UK, and we want to reach as many people as possible with our message that there is a more democratic way out. If everyone reading this message donated £3 today we would be able to cover all the expenses for this event, and have some more to spare to continue building on this work in the months ahead.

The campaign is promoted by DIEM25 and by a group of British and European citizens.
We respect the choice of all those who could vote in the Brexit referendum and we recognise the democratic outcome of the vote. All of us sympathise with the valid reasons of many of those who voted Remain, and understand and share the motives of many of those who voted Leave. Fundamentally, we believe in democracy.
But we also believe that the Brexit process so far has failed everyone and that we need more time and a much better democratic process to understand what to make of Brexit. Citizens Assemblies could be the only way to bring together leavers and remainers to understand what to make of Brexit.
Our campaign is led by volunteers, requires time, passion and most importantly money.

With the money we raise, we can promote our campaign by arranging nationwide speaking tours and promotional events including production of advertising materials such as leaflets and posters. We can also develop our website and provide supporter newsletter.
