A friend in need

Donation protected
A long time friend Carlita recently moved to Peru with her new husband and a family of dogs and cats and had started to settle there both of them teaching and working together to build a new life. I saw photos on Facebook and they looked so happy it was lovely to see that Carlita had found  someone to love. Keeping a friendship alive across half the world is helped nowadays by social media but it doesn’t tell all. Andres had had a difficult time and although seemingly happy he had suffered from mental health issues in the past which Carla believed were behind him as they both grew into a very special love. The photos posted were of a loving and happy couple with their family of pets.

One ordinary Thursday when both Carlita and Andres were due to teach that day Carlita woke to find Andres already gone? No note or message was left. Eventually after a two days of complete silence Carlita read this article in a newspaper

Andres had returned to Ecuador and committed suicide, Carlita was devasted! His funeral was arranged in Ecuador but Carla was unable to leave Peru because of visa restrictions. She was left on her own to deal with this heart-breaking loss.

My circumstances at this time are that I have recently lost my mother and so am looking for a full time job again after caring for her up until her death. It means that actually I am free to travel to Peru to give Carlita some support, so she that doesn’t feel completely alone in the world. Social media can help but when you are so far away from your family and friends and have only just arrived in a new place you just don’t have any support network around you that is so needed in difficult times.

Carlita has considered returning to the UK but with pets it means they would need expensive vaccinations and getting the money together to fly 2 dogs and 3 cats is far out of her means at the moment. She cannot bring herself to get them adopted in Peru and leave on her own as that would mean more loss for her and is unthinkable! If I could visit for a month or two to see her through such a difficult time, help with the animals and generally make myself useful it could make such a difference to my friend.

I am asking for help for the cost of a return flight. Flying from the UK to Lima is generally between £500 and £600 and so I am hoping to raise at least £500. I wouldn’t need any accommodation costs but maybe a little to pay for food would be great too!

As I am a teacher and researcher I feel I could also use the trip to perhaps do some voluntary work in Lima’s schools? Or explore any volunteer roles in environmental issues or make some connections that could help me find full time work on my return to the UK too?

If over £500 is raised I also promise to donate 15%  (of the amount above £500) to MIND a charity dealing with mental health issues in the UK.

This is an urgent appeal and the sooner I can get to Peru to be with my friend to help her through this difficult time, the better.
