Yangrima Children Earthquake Help

£16,512 of £20,000 goal

Raised by 142 people in 44 months

A disaster hit home here at Yangrima School on Saturday the 25th of April. A powerful 7.8 magnitude of earthquake devastated our village Sermathang in Helambu and many parts of Nepal. It’s the nation’s worst earthquake in 80 years and already has claimed the lives of more than 8,000 people. Thousands more are injured and displaced.  And the termors continue to cause terror and more damages.

Most of the houses in Sermathang and neighbouring villages are destroyed. Most of the school building is very badly damaged and the boarding house is completely destroyed. The children at Yangrima School need your help.

I helped start Yangrima School 25 years ago and worked there for 10 years in the 90's. We produced some of the best students in the Helambu region many of who are working to improve education, health and livelihood in Nepal. I am based in Nepal and want to help rebuild the school and assist more rural young people achieve their potential and contribute to their society.

We need your help to provide temporary learning centres until the schools restart,  shelter and meals to the children in the short term. Your support will also help us plan for the new Yangrima School. We want to rebuild the School and a safer future for the children in Helambu region. And improve life in the mountain villages.

Today, you can donate to earthquake relief and help rebuild Yangrima from this site. 100% of every donation will fund earthquake relief efforts, children's learning centre and help the new Yangrima School.

What does that mean exactly? Right now, funds will go to the most urgent needs: water, food, shelter, sanitation, hygiene, and emergency daycare for the children in Sermathang and nearby villages. Down the road, your support will help the school rebuild. The damages are deep and the recovery won’t be swift, but our response can be.

Nepal needs our help. Nepal needs your help.

Dear All,
Last week the local school in Balgoan finally started teaching so we closed our learning centre in Balgaon -all the 60 children were in a much better form and were ready to go to school. So now we are supporting the learning center in Komrang, helping Yangrima School and have set up a children’s hostel in Sermathang with nearly 30 children who lost their homes, schools and some even family members. All of these hostel children go to Yangrima School.

We have commissioned a local engineering firm Entraspace to help design strong, green and beautiful classrooms, hostel and other facilities in the old school location.

We are currently setting up a charitable organisation (an NGO) to oversee the rebuilding work including raising the additional fund required.

I will e-mail you a final report including the financial statement by the end of August. In the meantime please ‘like’ our new facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/YangrimaHelambu) for short updates and images. Most of the information on our facebook pages will also be included in my report.

All of these wouldn’t have been possible without your help. So Thank You.

Namaste,
Gopal Lama

The tremors are calmer, Kathmandu is busier and the schools are re-opening. Formal classes at Yangrima school have started in tents. And all 40 children from the Yangrima Children Learning Centre now attend these classes. We will continue to support the learning centres in Balgoan and Komrang until their local school reopens. Over 120 children received free lunch, stationary, play items, clothes and care over the past four weeks –when they needed it most. Your support to my GoFundMe campaign made it possible. Thank you.

Over the next months, we will design and plan facilities for a new school building which will be safe from future earthquakes. I need to close my GoFundMe fundraising campaign soon. So please spread the word and help us meet our fundraising target.
Namaste and Tashi Deleg.

The tremors continue to cause havoc to lives, damage properties and suppress hope. However we are keeping up with our work in Sermathang.

The Yangrima Children helped clear debris from school. A team of 30 + strong volunteers removed the stones from the damaged school site. We've completed a need assessment in Sermathang and surrounding villages. And now we are starting Children's Learning Center with the help of parents in Sermathang and Bolgoan.
