World's Largest Sierpinski Triangle

Professor Victor Donnay, Mathematics Professor from Bryn Mawr College, is leading a special event to raise awareness of the fun, excitement and importance of mathematics for Philadelphia school children and adults: creating the World’s largest Sierpinski Triangle out of K’Nex pieces!
The event, on April 24, 2016 from 12 pm - 4 pm, is part of the Wagner Free Institute of Science’s program "Symmetry, Sequence and Starfish: Exploring Math in Nature" which is occurring during the week long Philadelphia Science Festival . The Sierpinski Triangle is a fractal shape that illustrates important principles from the new mathematical field of fractal geometry.
The world record attempt, to be submit to the Guinness Book of World Records, will use 30,000 K’Nex pieces to create a 90 feet long by 45 feet wide triangle built out of 6500 smaller triangles.
After the event, the K’Nex pieces will be repackaged into 50 kits and donated to teachers. In addition, Dr. Donnay will present a FREE workshop on how to teach math using Sierpinski Triangles at the PRNP professional development day for STEM teachers on June 18.
We would like to raise $1500 by April 30, 2016 to help pay for the purchase of the K'Nex. The remaining costs are being covered by generous donations from the Philadelphia Regional Noyce Partnership , the Wagner Free Institute, the Philadelphia Science Festival, Bryn Mawr College and the K’NEX company. Please support us in this effort to bring math awareness to children and adults in the Philadelphia area and to support teachers in their efforts to make math come alive for their students.
