Mr. Syed Ahmed Jamal, beloved Lawrence family man, scientist and community leader, has been detained by ICE agents and is being held in jail in Morgan County, Missouri awaiting deportation.  Syed is a well-respected Molecular Biologist who has done significant research with the University of Kansas, Children’s Mercy, Rockhurst University, and other local entities.  He has lived in the United States for thirty years and has attained his undergraduate and graduate degrees here.  Syed is a devoted supporter of his children’s schools, regularly volunteering in classrooms and on site councils and recently mounting a campaign for a vacated school board seat.  Syed is viewed as a leader within his faith community at the Lawrence Islamic Center as well.

Last week, Syed was arrested in front of two of his children as he readied them for school.  His wife and three children (9th grade, 7th grade, and 1st grade) are devastated and fearful.   This family is in crisis and needs our support.  Please donate towards legal costs while this family fights  for a stay of removal.

My name is Marci Leuschen, a friend of the family in Lawrence,KS, and I am helping to organize this on behalf of Syed's family.   These generous donations will be used to help fund Syed's legal costs and the added expenditures that come from being in this situation.
Syed's brother, Syed H. Jamal of Phoenix, AZ will manage these funds.

Big win for the Jamal family!!! Court reopens case for full trial.

On August 9th, 2018, the Board of Immigration Appeals has agreed with Syed Jamal that he should be given an opportunity to present his deportation case to an Immigration Judge. This is a clear victory for not only the Jamal family, but the his community of supporters who advocated for due process.

“This is certainly a wonderful day for Mr. Jamal, his wife and their three children.” said Rekha Sharma-Crawford, Jamal’s lead attorney. “Since the Board of Immigration Appeals remanded the case for a full hearing, Mr. Jamal and his family will now have the opportunity to ask an Immigration Judge to review multiple forms of relief allowed under the law; it is also a good day for the rule of law.” Sharma-Crawford said.
“The family could not be happier”, said Alan Anderson a partner at Polsinelli and a friend of the family.. “Syed is part of our community’s fabric and we are thrilled with the Board’s decision”.

The Jamal family thanks you for all of your support, this victory could not have happened without you. Please continue to stay engaged and we will keep you informed as the case progresses.

Syed Jamal is HOME in Lawrence, KS

It's far from over, but man, did this feel good to see this family come back together on Tuesday – March 20th! Don't ever let anyone tell you that a unified voice and a community committed to action can't make a difference. There is still much more work to do to keep Syed from being deported. For now, we are thankful that Syed will be with his family while his case progresses with the Board of Immigrations Appeals. We are thankful for all your support over the past 56 days, we couldn’t have done it without you!!
Thank you to our members of Congress - Representative Lynn Jenkins, Representative Emmanuel Cleaver and Senator Claire McCaskill for listening to our concerns and supporting us in this fight.
A big shout out to Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins who is sponsoring the Private Bill which provides a pathway to permanent residency for Syed and Angela Jamal.

Statement from Lynn Jenkins following the release of Syed Jamal
March 20, 2018
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) released the following statement after a federal district court ordered the release of Syed Jamal.
“Over the past 30 years, Syed Jamal has been living, learning, working, paying taxes, and ultimately raising three all-star American born kids with his wife Angela right here in Kansas. With limited resources and violent, criminal illegal immigrants still in our country, the fact that our government would prioritize resources to attempt to deport Syed is offensive to our common sense and a fiscally reckless use of taxpayer dollars. Syed is the type of immigrant our nation always has and should continue to welcome, exactly the type of immigrant this “nation of immigrants” was built by.”
