Mr. Syed Ahmed Jamal, beloved Lawrence family man, scientist and community leader, has been detained by ICE agents and is being held in jail in Morgan County, Missouri awaiting deportation.  Syed is a well-respected Molecular Biologist who has done significant research with the University of Kansas, Children’s Mercy, Rockhurst University, and other local entities.  He has lived in the United States for thirty years and has attained his undergraduate and graduate degrees here.  Syed is a devoted supporter of his children’s schools, regularly volunteering in classrooms and on site councils and recently mounting a campaign for a vacated school board seat.  Syed is viewed as a leader within his faith community at the Lawrence Islamic Center as well.

Last week, Syed was arrested in front of two of his children as he readied them for school.  His wife and three children (9th grade, 7th grade, and 1st grade) are devastated and fearful.   This family is in crisis and needs our support.  Please donate towards legal costs while this family fights  for a stay of removal.

My name is Marci Leuschen, a friend of the family in Lawrence,KS, and I am helping to organize this on behalf of Syed's family.   These generous donations will be used to help fund Syed's legal costs and the added expenditures that come from being in this situation.
Syed's brother, Syed H. Jamal of Phoenix, AZ will manage these funds.

Syed Jamal is STILL being detained in Kansas City. The legal process may take some time, so our taxpayers resources are being wasted keeping him in prison. Contact DHS and tell them that Syed should be home with his family as the legal process runs its course.

Today was a roller coaster of emotions for the Jamal family and our community!

We found out that the court had ruled against reopening the case based on jurisdiction ONLY. Then we heard that Syed was already on a plane headed towards Bangladesh. His record disappeared from the ICE locator.

Syed’s lawyer immediately filed an appeal to the Board of Immigration Appeals and a new TEMPORARY stay of removal was granted at 4:33 PM.

Thanks to this new stay, Syed was pulled off the plane while the plane was stopping to refuel in Honolulu, HI.

We are requesting that Syed be sent home to his family and community in Lawrence, KS while his case progresses and hopefully is reopened.

Please continue to share the petition to show the world that you are behind GETTING SYED HOME to his family permanently.

A message from Syed's lawyer, Rekha Sharma-Crawford -
We visited Syed Ahmed Jamal at the West Texas Detention Facility Saturday, February 10th. We were accompanied by Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II. We went to ensure our client understood what was happening in his case and make sure he was being treated well.

Congressman Cleaver went to meet the college professor, who had never committed a crime, but who was taken into custody by ICE from his front lawn and in front of his child. The Congressman went to meet the man who was so beloved by his community and his family that they were fiercely rallying for his release. He also went to give support to a man in detention nearly 950 miles from the only place he considers home.

As they spoke, Syed asked the Congressman how the Congressman’s wife was doing. And in that moment, we all learned why so many people are vociferously supporting Syed. Because even in the face of such distress, Syed took a moment to focus not on his own predicament, but instead to ask this Congressman, who had traveled so far to provide comfort, how his wife was doing. Humility and grace in the face of adversity. #freesyedjamal
