Autistic Child Needs Help

Donation protected
Ben is 9 years old. He is in the 3rd grade. He is autistic. He has been attending a charter school for Gifted and Talented children. After a summer of dealing with a neighborhood bully, Ben returned to school with significant social and emotional challenges. Despite the school's promises to be knowledgeable of twice exceptional needs, they refused to provide a formal plan to help accomodate his disability at school. When his mother, concerned over months of difficulties that seemed to only get worse, and continued challenges getting even simple accomodations aheared to, pushed for a plan - the principal verbally attacked her, called her son names and then said that they would have to find another school.

With complaints in process with the Office of Civil Rights, the Department of Education, and the School District,  and the support of a disablity advocate, Ben and his mother wanted to believe that things would get better. Sadly, after completing the plan Ben returned to school only to be openly discriminated and retaliated against- even being made to go without eating while in school and being suspended when school bullies pushed him against a wall and hit him in the chest because he defended himself just enough to get away.

Ben is now home while his mother works to find an appropriate school environment for him. He cannot return to the offending school without retalliation, the neighborhood school is not an option, all other schools are closed for enrollment through 2017, and in order to have any chance of the school district reimbursing private tuition they have to follow a lengthy and involved paper process. It is a bit late in the year to start a home school curriculum. The one option remaining is to have Homebound support, which the district declined by saying Ben was “not disabled enough.”

There is little chance that his mother will be able to afford the $2000 a month tuition for private school, and the lawyers all make $300+ an hour. He is also needing extra support from an independant psychologist for emotional duress. So we are asking the community, friends, familiy and anyone who wants to see Ben have an opportunity for success in school to consider giving what they can.

He is a really, smart sweet kid and he doesn't deserve any of these problems. He deserves a chance to go to school without fear. To be supported and loved for the amazing child that he is. Please help us get him back to school!
