 FORT LAUDERDALE, FL
A 9-month-old puppy was rescued when she was rushed to Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue after being found fighting for life in a house fire.

Sweet Pea, a nine month old mixed breed puppy, is currently in the critical care unit at LVS. She has been treated for smoke inhilation,  2nd degree burns to approximately 20-30 percent of her body and is fighting to stay alive.

Sweet Pea lost two of her best dog friends to the fire, as two other dogs died due to smoke inhilation. Doctors currently say her prognosis is serious at this time and her condition will vary day-to-day.

Sweet Pea has received bandages, pain medication, oxygen and IV fluids from the doctors. She will also need to undergo daily wound management. Her and her owner, Jason Hall, need your help as the costs are rising daily.

Whatever you are able to donate, please find it in your heart to help Sweet Pea and her owner in the recovery process. Please share and let people know they can try to help save the life of Sweet Pea with any size of donation. All donations will go to Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists who are covering the costs daily.

Sweet Pea is all Mr. Hall has left and all donations can help.

Any funds raised over the costs needed to assist in the recovery of Sweet Pea will be put into the Pet's Tree Of Hope to help save the lives of future cases like hers.

Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and donations.

Thank you for all of your contributions, unfortunately Sweet Pea's condition worsened significantly and she passed away this morning. For more information, please read the updated press release below. Thank you again for your contributions and supporting Sweet Pea.

Funds leftover from the donations made for Sweet Pea will be put into the Pet’s Tree of Hope Fund, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that helps South Florida animals.

UPDATE: Puppy dies after Fort Lauderdale house fire

On Thursday morning, doctors from Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists contacted Sweet Pea’s owner to inform him that her condition took a significant turn for the worse.

According to doctors, burn wounds are often deceptive upon first appearance and their condition tends to worsen over time. Sadly, the burns Sweet Pea suffered were too much for her body to handle, even with the best of medical care.

After discussing with Sweet Pea’s owner, a decision was made to end her suffering.

“Words can’t describe the sadness our team is feeling this morning,” said Dr. Ira Zaslow, founder of Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists. “While medical technology gives us an ever-increasing ability to do amazing things, tragically, Sweet Pea’s burn injury continued to worsen covering over 75 percent of her body. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Hall, and Sweet Pea will certainly hold a special place in all of our hearts.”

Sweet Pea’s case demonstrated the generosity and kindness of the South Florida community, as hundreds of people rallied around her, along with people from all over the U.S., and donated funds for her care via a GoFundMe page.

“I’m extremely grateful to the community for coming together to donate funds to try to help Sweet Pea and the team that tried to save her,” said Jason Hall, Sweet Pea’s owner.

Funds leftover from the donations made for Sweet Pea will be put into the Pet’s Tree of Hope Fund, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that helps South Florida animals.

Additionally, Sweet Pea will live on forever at Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists with a leaf that will be added to the Pet’s Tree of Hope in her memory.

Sweet Pea was rescued Monday morning at approximately 9 a.m., when Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to a fire at the 1800 block of Southwest 22nd Street in Fort Lauderdale. Shortly before firefighters arrived, neighbors pulled the 9-month-old puppy from the house, according to Jason Hall, Sweet Pea’s owner.

Firefighters gave the puppy oxygen and transported her to Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists. Neighbors and firefighters also attempted to save Hall’s other two dogs, but they died at the scene.

Thank you so much for your continued support. On a positive note, Sweet Pea's wounds are still clear from infection and she is being kept comfortable with pain medication.

We are nearly half of the way to our goal in just over 24 hours. Please continue to share this post as we really need to hit this goal for Sweet Pea and her owner, Jason Hall.

Very sorry and saddened to hear Sweet Pea's condition grew worse. I'm happy you got to say goodbye, although it is never easy. There's solace in knowing she is with her doggy parents and not in anymore pain. Rest in Peace, Sweet Pea. Continued prayers.... ♥

I adopted a pit bull mix from the Broward Animal Control back in September 2015. The pet Picasso who is highly intelligent and very mild and obedient ended up saving my life in February from a carbon monoxide leak. Channel 10 came to my home and filmed a special on Picasso. Pets are so loyal and dedicated to their family. Much better than a former principal I worked for that tried to set me up and lied which was document in the legal hearings resulting me coming out well against the public school system in South Florida due to physical injuries I suffered. A LOT of money that should have went for student learning went for lawyers, medical bills, and a generous settlement.
