Sweet Prudence

Dear Friends.

Nik and I experienced our worst nightmare this past weekend. We were on the boat, pulling up to the beach. I usually hold onto Prudence but we had slowed down and I turned to see where we should park the boat. She usually stays put but when she saw the beach this time, she jumped. We shut the boat off as quickly as possible but it managed to get her back legs.

We acted fast, pulling her out of the water but she is very badly injured. We phoned our incredible neighbors and they were there waiting to help us when we got home. They rushed Louisa away from the scene. It was extremely traumatic for all of us. I was able to make a tourniquet for her legs with ropes and towels but there was no where to take her anywhere near Kilmarnock. We raced back to Richmond stopping at Chickahominy Animal Hospital who gave us pain meds and told us she had lost too much blood and to "GO!" The doctors at Dogwood Animal Hospital were waiting for us when we pulled up. We feel blessed that we made it to them and she is receiving the best care possible.

Her body was in shock and she needed blood transfusions. She is fighting hard but has a long battle ahead. She has two broken femurs and terrible wounds. We are praying hard.

Prudence is our second child and Louisa's "sister." After struggling for four years with infertility post Louisa, we decided to get Prudence and she has changed us forever. We never knew this kind of love could exist between man and dog. She is an integral part of our family. She is our second child. She is the best dog we could ever ask for...she's also really young.

The medicial expenses are already building up but we know we have no choice but to fight just as hard as she is fighting. Prudence will need to undergo multiple surgeries but we believe she can stay strong. She loves us and we love her. We need our puppy to survive.

Our reason for sharing this story is not just financial because even if all you can give is prayers, we will be forever grateful. We promise that any additional funds we receive that are not needed will be donated to the Henrico Humane Society. We will continue to pay it forward and help those in their times of need.

We hope that others can learn from our terrible accident.
