Thank you for your patience and generosity!

On July 8, 2014, Tam was abandoned at birth at a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. He was born with an extremely rare condition called Tessier Cleft Palate. Today, there are only 60 known cases in the world.

At two weeks of age, Tam was brought to Mia An Orphanage. At two months of age, the Helping Orphans Worldwide (HOW) team met Tam for the first time and immediately knew he needed our help.

HOW then began reaching out to hundreds of doctors around the world to ask for assistance to correct Tam’s severe bi-lateral cleft palate. Fortunately, Facing the World, a team of surgeons from the U.K. responded with a promise of help. To do so, Tam needed to weigh 10 kilos, but he was underweight at 7 kilos. HOW’s Executive Director, Hillary Brown, was granted guardianship and took Tam home to care for him personally. After consulting with several doctors, Hillary learned Tam needed a gastric feeding tube for him to achieve his goal weight for surgery.

By April 11, 2016, Tam weighed a little over 10 kilos and was able to undergo his first reconstructive surgery with Facing the World! After a successful six-month recovery period, Tam underwent his second surgery on October 5th to make the final closure to his palate. This was done through the generosity of Operation Smile.

Tam’s next stop was at KK Hospital in Singapore to conduct a swallow study to see if he is capable of eating. He passed with flying colors, but it was during this visit doctors discovered his ears were severely infected. He received ear grommet surgery to keep from losing his hearing. In addition, he is now receiving much-needed physical, occupational and feeding therapy to help Tam live a self-sufficient life.

Almost a year later, we are proud to have helped Tam through this miraculous journey. Although there is still a long road ahead for Tam, he is now ready to rejoin his “brothers and sisters” at Mia An Orphanage to resume his life until he finds his “forever family”. Until then, we will need continued help and support of any kind for Tam’s on-going care. Tam will require a full-time caregiver, special needs schooling and continued therapies and medical treatment.

It is through the kindness, love and generosity of our friends that we have made it this far with Tam. If you are able to contribute in any way, we have updated our goal as we now see what will be needed to continue with the remarkable progress Tam has achieved.
